You'd like to relate to an a@#hole who tries to kill you and your friends? I recommend playing Dark Souls, just about everything there will potentially kill you. -_-So... A poorly written villain?
I don't know about you, but I like my characters to be relatable in some way, usually by having motivations that are at least comprehensible.
If you want a game where people are evil because
a.) They just are.
b.) They're insane, therefore evil
c.) They're loyal to the clearly evil person because they weren't ALWAYS evil.
Then go play WoW. Warcraft hasn't had a well written villain since Arthas.
Well, not quite.
Tony Montana was very much a villain. He did despicable things and hurt innocent people, almost purely out of his own greed and pride. And yet despite this, when seeing his downfall happen in the film, most people feel that while Tony got what he deserved, they are also a bit saddened to see him die. It's an interesting mix because many people can see part of themselves in Tony. He brought himself up and found success. His missteps and bad choices are fairly comparable to bad decisions many people may have faced or made in their life times. That's what makes him relatable.
Art, and media in general, tries to make itself relatable to convey it's message and intent to more people. FF14 has a plot mostly driven by our character, and the antagonists. Our character, almost never does things on their own, they are by design a proxy of us. The villains actually have their own motivations and reasons to act. And if they aren't relatable, it's harder to relate to the plot, as what other connections do we have?
I actually really enjoyed Dark Souls. But it's not really due to dying a lot or anything like that. Rather, the melancholy and lonely exploration combined with grim environs and intriguing setting try to relate to the player's sense of exploration and discovery. I didn't find the difficulty to be the main draw at all.

Livia is clearly his friends with benefits...not his adopted daughter rofl.
