To those saying to ignore crafting until I get one combat class to level 50, how can I get upgrades otherwise? I got some tanking gear from level 15 quests, but I haven't seen any since (which is why I started leveling armorer). My weapon is from my level 15 class quest still. Maybe I just hit an odd patch of quests, but it felt like I wasn't getting the right gear from them.
If you are in FC ask them to craft something for you, if you leveling DOH & DOL at the same time then there is nothing to worry about because you can provide a gear for your self. No need to be HQ normal gear also sufficient if self craft. But for your level, crafting HQ is easy for high level crafter so just ask you FC they sure help you.

Yeah I didn't worry about gear while leveling my first class. My item level was usually around 8 or 9 levels behind my class level.

It's possible to get a secondary class to 50 within a week with a lot of hard grinding, but even on a secondary, it's not something that will happen in casual play. On your first class, which also has the main storyline to deal with (a lot of XP comes from that, but it also takes quite a bit of time), and doesn't have the Armoury bonus that speeds up later classes, it's going to take a few weeks at least. A month or two is probably most common, and it can take a lot longer than that if you're also doing other stuff (like leveling crafting).

The time estimates on DoH vary widely largely because it depends on how much you're actually doing yourself. If someone else did all your crafting for you and all you did was the turn-in step of a whole bunch of crafting leves, then sure, that turn-in step can be done really fast. If, on the other hand, you count the time spent to actually do the crafting itself, let alone the gathering time for all the materials, then DoH leveling is pretty time-intensive. (Leveling combat classes is also sped up dramatically if you have a team that will carry you, but not as much as DoH is.)

Leveling the other classes should go faster once you know what you are doing. Guildhest roulette can definitely be done daily, most guildhests take only a few minutes and is a good exp bonus for the time put in, you will also be able to get a decent amount of GC seals from guildhests with which you can buy gear.

Also I know the other posters are saying not to worry about gear, however you are playing a tank class which means gear is gonna be more vital to you, especially after lvl 30. DPS can kinda get away with wearing lvl 15 gear in a lvl 30+ dungeons, tanks can't. If you dont have time to farm the dungeons for tank drops and can't afford the gear on the MB maybe ask someone in your FC/LS to make gear for you because once the dungeons start getting harder it will be a lot harder for you to hold hate/stay alive if you are vastly undergeared.

I took the time and now ARM and BSM are pretty much caught up to my level. I'll probably just keep those two going for now and then revisit the others later.

For gear without crafting or Gil I tend to do a bunch of Guildleves. Many of them reward gear that you can use and sell if you don't. Also when doing Guildleves many of them have a treasure chest randomly spawned in the area that often has something you can use.

Running dungeons over a few times will help with the gear but takes longer.

You CAN hit the cap in a week. But it'll be a boring grind. You'd have to fate grind all day long, do leve quests and bang out the roulette's you have. At 44 you'd go for speed runs to 50. I did it in 2 days from 44 to 50 simply because it's boring. Also, it dependent on the class you play. If you play a healer or a tank. You'd find a duty finder match in 4-5 minutes while a dps might have to wait 20-30 minutes. There's a few things that can help also. Buying food of the market gives you 3% bonus. And the rested bonus is nice aswell. After you hit 50 with one class you get a permanent bonus for any other jobs you want to level. Ofcourse this is all hardcore gaming. If casual. I'd suggest you do all the story quests. Do your leve quests. Focus on 1 char first. Find 3 friends to play and level with you. And than you can casually get to 50 in a week or 3 maybe 2,5 or so.

That doesn't come at level 50. It comes at level 10, as soon as you can unlock other classes. You'll only ever have full XP costs for one of your battle classes, whichever is currently your highest one. All others will get a 50% XP buff. (If you're leveling multiple classes in parallel, alternating back and forth between which is highest, that trades which one is getting the buff, but regardless, you'll still have it on all but one of them. Any time a new class takes over as your top one and loses that buff, your former top class gains it.)

After getting Leatherworking up to 15 now, I think I'm just going to save crafting for when I at have at least one level 50 combat class. It doesn't appear like crafting in this game is meant to be leveled up with your class to supply gear, which I guess is something I already knew but hoped to be able to power through.

Maybe it's more so the fault of my server's economy than the game itself; I could definitely just level Blacksmith and Armorer within reason, but the materials from the other classes are always only in expensive stacks on the market. In other games, I could usually just buy the one or two I needed to make specific items.

I'm going to try to just level via dungeon runs and hopefully gear up that way (the gear appears to be better anyway).

Jenova actually has a very healthy market.. The reason the low lvl gear is cheaper to buy than make is because people make those while leveling, so there's a large surplus and very little demand since most people can just get quest/dungeon gear that are better. Also.. as for the stack sizes, there's not enough people gathering low lvl mats, so there's only 2-3 people selling each kind, if that.. Usually it's just 1 person. In that case, there's no need to split the stack sizes, it'll eventually sell and it's less of a headache to do it that way. On the bright side, when you start gathering, that means you can actually make some money while leveling, considerable amount.

But having to get all of your own mats as you level your crafting, that isn't exactly the fastest nor the most efficient way to do it.

Just get a combat class to lv 50, then botany/mining to 50 to make some money.. After that, you can just powerlevel crafting by throwing money at them (about 100-250k each for 1-50)
Or if you have no interest in gathering, just get to lv 50 then start spiritbonding for gil, once you make a stockpile of around 5m gil, you should be ready to work on your crafting.
