Their replies have left open the possibility that there may be a trickle of new housing wards at some indeterminate point, but they've said their focus is on features rather than availability.
On larger servers, 40m or so can be enough to convince a player to relinquish a small lot (You will still have to pay the NPC price for it). Good luck!
Let me ask this is there any servers with large houses for sale?

Servers with smaller populations may still have lots left, which leads to this elitist "you should just switch servers" mentality some people have. The lack of houses wouldn't really be a problem though if it was simply side content for fun with no actual bearing on gameplay. Unfortunately, SE has decided to lock certain content behind owning a FC or personal house, (at the moment, raising a chocobo beyond rank 10 or dying it's feathers a different colour), and soon this will only get worse once Heavensward is released, where the player needs to build an airship to access new expansion areas and participate in upcoming content (airship battles?) - which SE has said can only be done by using a basement attached to a house.
Now, if they brought in an alternative means to access this content (like, a communal chocobo stable for raising chocobos without a house, or an airship workshop run by Cid to build player airships), this would solve this potential problem. But right now, as it stands on Legacy servers like Balmung where there are no free plots at all, there will be the very real risk that a significant portion of the player community will be locked out permanently of certain content -not a good thing for a game that is selling itself as a game for casual players.
Either way, I really hope Yoshi and the development team have another look at this serious issue and find ways to address it, if not by adding more wards then maybe alternative means like the ideas I suggested.
Even the server I'm on has no housing plots left for sale. Yup, it's about time for them to add more plots. :P

Coeurl has medium and large lots available
Jenova has plenty of lots open. There's a medium I have my eye on to upgrade to (from the small) for 9.3mil.
But yes, housing seems to be a problem (especially on large servers). But even on low-pop servers that have plenty of open spots, the houses that are purchased are ghost shacks.
Most don't have outdoor furnishings besides the chocobo stable, and I only have about a 1/50 chance of actually seeing someone when I near my house or at the MB.

I've honestly given up on the hope that I will ever have a house... It's just too bloody damn expensive and I hate crafting, always have in every MMORPG I've played, so I basically only get gil if I am willing to grind soul bonding for materia (something so mind numbingly boring that I only do it when I'm drinking... thus successfully obtaining numb mind status *cough*). I don't really do soul bond grinding very often as I have work 5 days a week, and so I don't want to spend the little bit of playing time I actually do have, doing that horrible task (or having a hangover at work lol). So the only other option I can think of is to sell gear I guess.
I honestly think housing should be instanced. I almost never even see anyone and rarely talk to people when I go to my free company's house. RP can still be enjoyed in instanced housing plots, it's done in RIFT, and I don't see the big deal in it being done in FFXIV too.

You have the means to get a house but just instantly dismiss the means as boring. Of course it's boring, but people got medium or even large houses that way. They put in the hard work, you basically want the carrot for hard work without actually doing the work.I've honestly given up on the hope that I will ever have a house... I find the whole housing debacle quite sad. On the one hand they clearly put a lot more thought/time/energy into designing XIV's housing system. On the other hand it feels vastly inferior in terms of actual enjoyment by the player base compared to XI. The neighborhoods are pretty but empty. You can customize the interior more but there's no real point to ever checking in on your home.
I LOVED my mog house in XI. Was proud of it despite everyone having one. My place in XIV, while more difficult to get just feels "meh" when I walk in. They used to hype the hell out of housing pre-launch. Yet now it feels like their design crashed and burned so their just pretending it doesn't exist anymore.
