Mannequin? When?

They announced these along with FC bulletin boards but nothing ever came of either.

I remember them mentioning this as well and nothing was ever said of it again. There's actually a substantial list of housing features they've said they were working on that never got released (such as a music jukebox and interior lighting controls) so I'm hoping they're saving them all for the expansion.

The one potential issue with the mannequins is that they would essentially act as an additional storage container, and we all know how stingy SE is with that.

i mean you can store stuff with them, sell your stuff with them, display armor on them.

the only issue is that you can only put them out in your house garden.

being outside isn't the big issue, the bigger issues are you can't buy more without using real money and there's a very low limit on how many you can display.

being outside is kind of a good thing since people will actually see that more often.

there is the additional issue that you can only display 1 with a small house, 2 with medium house and 3 with a large

Retainers also aren't ideal since they're restricted to the equipment that matches their assigned class. A mannequin would have no such restrictions and would serve solely to display the equipment.

The whole 'outside only' thing is a bit of an annoyance as well.

Agreed. I would love to dress up a NPC as a bartender to be placed inside my house, be it a generic NPC or my retainer.
