Please either add a "Worn Shield" to Glad when starting out or make it a bit easier to get one. I'm still not sure why you receive Phalanx at r8 when shields are such a pain to get a hold of. I cant speak for other servers but on Lindblum we have players trying to sell r5 maple shields at 75k (like a new or old player will be willing or able to pay that), and I have not been able to find an npc shop selling anything low rank for a price that affordable, so for new players its going be quite a long time before they get to use them or their skills.

I agree. I have a gladiator too and really need a cheap beginner shield. I'm going to try to make a maple shield or bronze hoplon but I think I need to learn three different crafts for each! Also, I started with a blacksmith so I have no armor in the body slot, and no idea how long untill I can make/afford some!

It seems to be impossible to focus on one craft at a time, meaning If I want some low level gear I have to learn 3 or more crafts up to rank ?what? first. I guess there's the option of joining a linkshell or trading materials at the market. I would like to just solo for now, but it's seems to hard.

What are other playing doing about this. When did you make or purchase your first gear upgrades, and how? How do you find out what crafting level is required for a specific recipe?

i played at launch and dont think i got a shield til rank 20 lol. however in beta i got one early as a drop from a leve in LL.

I got the same drop as syntaxlies after the official launch also, but have since deleted the character and started another. Can't remeber which quest gave the drop, lol.

That may have been the Mho the Nibbler leve (as that is the only combat based faction leve that I've taken starting in Camp Skull Valley and the shield has dropped twice. I think from a treasure chest after defeating boss.

As screwed up as the pricing is op, you may need to buy a shield from an npc vendor (if they still have it) or buy an over leveled shield that's more affordable than the lower rank ones.

It sucks but the best course is to just rough it out with a shield that's higher rank than you, cheapest high Blocking that can be bought.

(Slight off-tangent) Shame that on my server the Walnut wands at r37ish cost 10x less than the r5ish Maple wand. Love those folks trying to churn out HQs.

Jutien if you go to ffxiv.yg.com you can search to see if there are any items you want being sold by vendors. I checked the shields for you and currently there are not and only one leve was mentioned and it's the carpenter leve so I assume that's to craft it. The lowest R shield is Square Maple and globaly it goes for around 20k.

As for Velo's crafting armor... good luck. I had the same difficulty with crafting for my level Gld. In order to make gear for a lower level gld or other class, you actually have to be crafting at a much higher level. I think it's silly to do that but I guess SE has a reason. Granted I haven't figure out why yet. /sigh

I'd also love to hear SE's reasons for this obstacle. Maybe they wanted to encourage players to help out lower levels or sell gear at an affordable price to lower players? Anyway, I guess I'll have to give the market wards a chance. It might help if players were blocked from buying gear cheaply at the market wards and then re-selling at a high price, by making it un-tradable on purchase.

I bet lots of players sell gear affordably to help out other players, but it's whipped up and put back on for a big profit . Though, of course this happens in all MMO's and stops people selling too cheap (which makes it hard for standard players to make profit), which is why instead it's important to give players the opportunity to make gear for themselves or get it from quests.

In fact, it probably comes down to lack of content, as you probably need three or more sets of gear for each 5 or 10 levels. Bog standard from quests, better crafted with same rank recipies, and best crafted with higher rank recipies (these would sell in market wards). Perhaps a compromised solution would be to have the standard, better and best gear of a particular type all being graphically identical, or just very slightly reworked.

Anyway, am I going round in circles, lol. I've definatley strayed from the topic oops, sorry.

Velo I'm not sure. I have thought about why would a game want you to craft and maybe for once enjoy it and not allow you to craft your own gear?! I mean you can do some things but if you reach in R the BSM and GLD and ARM you will notice, you can create axe heads for weaps and such for R20+ but you can't craft a damn pair of R5 SHOES FFS!!! /endrant Sorry but when it happened to me ....my head exploded. lol
