    Anyone else Playing on Linux?

I wanted to shift over to a Linux OS and heard that FFXIV can be played on Linux with Wine. I wanted some advice on which Linux OS works best for online gaming? Also if anyone has any videos/guides on how to install the game, that would be extremely helpful.

I plan to do a dual boot of Linux/Windows or a Linux OS with Windows VM, not sure which one would benefit me best at this point. I also plan to get a better GPU than the AMD Radeon 7950 that I currently have. Any suggestions as to what GPU's work best with Linux would be greatly appreciated as well.

My experience with Wine and MMOs is kind of a rough experience. MMOs are updated often which can cause many headaches. You might have it running in a playable state one day, and then have it completely broken the next.

As for dual boot vs. VM. VM's usually don't perform well with large 3D games.

As a programmer and an avid game player, I would recommend dual boot and just have all your games on the Windows OS. Linux is my "work mode", and having no games on that OS allows me to stay focused with less temptation to play games instead of working (as I would need to restart my computer to switch to windows).

Besides, it's a pain to get many games to work well in Linux.

Last time I tried using Wine with XIV, it was much too much of a headache to get stable. It likely isn't worth your time.

My advise -- don't bother. If SqEx port to linux, great, but generally, WINE + high demand games don't work.

I use Linux as primary OS, with a dual boot to Win7 where I play FFXIV and i'm happy with that config. If we get a linux-native one, I can finally get rid of Win7.

Unless you have a very high end system then I would recommend dual boot for gaming.

It's less convenient than a VM but my experience is that VMs do not perform well for gaming unless you have a very good CPU, a dedicated GPU and static dedicated RAM.

I wouldn't even bother trying to game on linux myself, it's just not worth the headache.

I like the dual idea more now that I think about it and of course with the suggestions. I am not fond of working in Windows, but I enjoy game play so Windows is sort of a staple. Thanks for the suggestions.

It would be great if they made a Linux Friendly version of FFXIV or any PC game really.

Unfortunately I doubt they ever will because Linux takes up an even smaller market percentage than Mac OS at this point. The average home consumer is using either Windows or Mac, primarily Windows, and home consumers are the target market for this game.

We'll see if Steam can pave a new way for Linux and Games.
