This thread is old by now, but it's nice that an issue was resolved.
However; Why on earth can't they provide the security question in these cases, for us to answer with the security answer? Who can answer a question they forgot? I don't even remember what my question and/or answer were, and if they didn't provide the question, there is no way I could answer at this point. This should honestly be changed.
For anyone having issues like this there is always the old SE account page(not mogstation) as well.. it lists the emails tied to the account and you can easily change them.

I get this error all the time when traveling.
The login system logs your IP address and does a GeoLocation look up. If your login location is far different than before, assuming a different state or different country. The automated account security precautions kick in.
