I'm completely baffled at the fact that a few whiners forced SE's hands not to implement such a feature. It's completely reasonable in general, to be honest; and especially with the housing system this game has, how limited and poorly executed it is in its mechanics, I think it's absolutely vital to have an auto-relinquish feature.
It probably just clashes with FF14's identity as a "casual" mmo.. I would assume Japanese attitudes had more to do with it than what NA/EU people did..
I could have accepted that as reasoning, the game wanting to be casual I mean, back at launch. And for a little while after that. With all the insane grinding and (double/triple) RNG gated content that's in it now though, if ever actually given as an answer, it would be laughable at best - as probably you yourself feel it too, judging by the quotation marks you put the word itself in.
