Pushing us towards Ishgard in this way also seems strange. Surely Merlwyb and Kan would welcome us to either Limsa or Gridania as an ally. Merlwyb states that their own state comes first and then the alliance. If they stay in an alliance with an Ul'dah run by the monetarists after a coup they merely legitimize them. So for Limsa and Gridania to break off ties with the new Ul'dah regime, a regime they surely despise and certainly don't trust for a moment, makes a lot more sense and then taking us in is just another way of showing their solidarity with the legitimate ruler...who ever that is if the sultana is truly dead.

In that case, it would also make a lot more sense for us to go to Limsa/Gridania to stand by our allies than run away to Ishgard.

. dsko;afjdkjf;a (stupid 10 char minimum and restrictions)

And there's also the political ramifications involved with them doing that Ul'dah can see it as them aiding and abetting fugitives and a lot of other stupid stuff that is political and boring. Also as the WoL and Alphinaud are supposed to be not beholden to any one of the city states that would give which ever state an edge over the other and not entirely a good thing. Remember it was with reluctance that minfillia even said to go ahead and join a grand company and that was pretty much only in name and honor.

Both Limsa and Gridania can't openly support us, at least when talking about relations with Ul'dah, since we're enemies of the state. At the same time they won't order their military forces to actively hunt us down because they know we're innocent. Essentially they're turning a blind eye to us right now, and that'll probably continue into 3.x. Ul'dah is still similarly "safe" because they're withholding information on the incident, but word's going to have to get out eventually as to where the Sultana is. Exactly how that information hitting the streets changes Ul'dah, and how Ul'dahn infrastructure will run without the Sultanate... nobody really knows.

Ishgard really is the best place to seek asylum; because it's not actually a member of the Alliance they don't have to worry about openly supporting you without souring relations with Ul'dah, and Ishgard isn't well-known for its good relations anyway. They'll probably try to keep it on the down-low anyway to try and avoid Ul'dah declaring war on them.

Nobody's quite sure how the coup in Ul'dah is going to affect regional politics yet.
