Most likely he was trying to learn about them. Remember that padjali are usually stuck protecting the Twelveswood and never get a chance to really explore the world. A-towa was different. He thirsted for knowledge beyond the Shroud. More than likely he was unprepared out of pure ignorance for the dangers in the mines.
