Having partied with a 600+ DPS MNK quite a bit recently (650 when we're all being tryhards), it wasn't so much parroting as just waiting for something substantial. It's not a number I see people hit much outside dummies.
"Substantial", however, came since my posts from the very same MNK mentioning he's most likely keeping his lead in his coil group explicitly because the resident NIN doesn't weave potions into his fights. Hasn't been tested, but if he's willing to say it about his own DPS being passable, I'll believe it.

Here's the facts though people,
On paper Monks are touted as top DPS, but it's such a close race unless its on a PERFECT dummy scenario. And thats the key factor. Monk can out-dps when conditions are perfect. When was the last time any fight gave anyone perfect conditions?
But moreso, when you get right down to it, everybody knows that the amount of effort that goes into playing Monk perfectly is WAY more than other classes; its exhausting. And yet for all the exhaustion, they BARELY eak out a better DPS score than say, a Ninja. And in many fights, Monk is forced out of commission (by losing GL3) MANY times (ala Turn 9) simply by battle mechanics that they cant control.
Monk needs a fix.
tldr;
Effort =/= Reward for Monk
