Story behind changing to Au Ra?

If I'm correct its also inferred that, regardless if every player characters is a male catboy or an Au'ra and all that, there aren't actually that many of them running around, just like how you may play with other Dragoons, but only YOU are the Azure Dragoon (of players atleast). THe same could be said of here that you are the only, or one of very few, Au'ra to show up before Yugiri (once you hit 3.0 areas its a bit more fair game though as far as we know for now.)

I was once confident about SE's concern for established lore, for exactly the reasons you state - but the recent debacle with the CUL 50 quest has shaken my faith. Still, it's not like me to be all doom 'n gloom; it could well be that SE has a good plan in store. We'll see.

Sorry, I might have missed the issue but what was this problem with the lvl 50 CUL quest? I know what the quest is as Ive done it but I'm not sure the issue. Having quests set at certain points in the game timeline is one of the ways to make long term story development feasible without having to do massive rewrites every time you have major shifts in the Main story.

Either that or they need to treat side quests and main scenario quest with no cross over at all. Personally I prefer integration of the stories over being able to do them in any order.

So to get back onto the topic I don't think there is a story behind you personally changing into an Au Ra, but you can RP whatever you like. I already know what mine will be. I am actually a sleeper agent for the Xaela and as I walk around in the ancient lands of Dravania and read all the stuff in the sharlayan library I will recover my memories and reclaim my true form as a warrior who was sent glamoured to foster parents to gather knowledge and fulfill my destiny as the Agito who will unite the warring tribes for a glorious conqurst that will be remembered for millenia.

You could always rationalize it by saying that a skilled alchemist in your homeland gives you a potion that causes your outward appearance to be Hyur/Elezen so that while YOU can see your horns/scales/tail, the citizens of Eorzea see you as a Hyur Female or Elezen Male.

Or you could consider that everything you see is a retelling of past events thanks to the Echo, and that your character is just an unreliable narrator

I change my character's race and appearance all the time (way too much in fact). I've been all races and clans, so I've just come to think of my character as a shape changer. This change will just be another in her repertoire of different appearances.

Personally, I don't mind changing Lin's backstory to match a wandering Au Ra (Auri?). I was never happy with the one I had for her to begin with, and I'm happy to ignore any inconsistencies since I'm 'not from Eorza' to begin with.

Since the Ishgardians are suspicious bastards no matter what race you are you aren't really at a disadvantage there, and they can't outright kill you since (if memory serves) you're sent there as a representative from a group they're asking for help from. I may need to refresh my memory on that one though.

EDIT: Refreshed my memory, and you're there with Alphinaud and Cid for the airship. I don't remember the sequence of events exactly, not a lot of cuts from that, but either way you're with a known and, presumably, respected Scion originally Sharlayan. So it's reasonable to assume that they're willing to give you a, grudging, chance to do what you need to and get out again. It's not like they could've anticipated you would catch a Dravinian High Inquisitor or anything...

And I'll cut Yugiri some slack since she started out saying she was from Doma, and may not have wanted to out you as originating from Doma/Othard once you two met since that might have put some suspicion on your integrity. Being that it's very firmly part of the Garlean Empire atm. Which is pretty much the very last thing anyone needed.
