And why wouldn't SE want to fold that "grinding" experience in with the fun stuff, so that people didn't have to spend any time doing something boring just so they could get to the fun stuff? But that's the thing, there was ALWAYS something to do if you weren't grinding. Even people that never played blm did sleepga2 quest, aspire, and countless more. Hell I did the adventurer's coupon for 50gil for every single time i made a new character, mules, etc. I had 3 accounts and 4 characters total, 2 mules and 2 mains. SE got a pile of money from me every month... People would make new characters just to do quests. And not just for money, but fun, too.

I'm with you man, adding grind incentives to this game is almost the craziest thing I've seen them do yet. Unfortunately I can see that it is probably easy to add and the FFXI-ers will enjoy it. They are nuts if they want this to be a grind game but I think Yoshi-P doesn't want that in the long term. Yoshi-P would probably say he hopes you play the game when it's finished.
ffxi is the only game i can think of with seperate quests and missions from grinding but it's also the only game with cut screens and real rpg game play. maybe alot don't care about that part but it is what makes it a rpg to me and why i have been put off by any other mmo since it. all other mmo's have a dinky little cutsceen at start of game and it's game over for most part nothing else. and no way in hell i'm cycling threw kill quests and ones they consider meaty story less they put an arrow on it saying so. i also new alot that didn't read quests, helll alot of people didn't even do them ..rather run back and forth handing in fame items to npc instead. but at least it seperated them for choice in what u was doing, when u was doing it.
Poor raptors!
Diablo 3 can't come soon enough!
Op speaks the truth....
This is FF... we shouldnt even be aware of our experience bar.... the story is supposed to be SOOO GOOOD... that our character needs to progress ACORDING to that story...
The way the game is designed (in a BAD and AWFUL way) is that you grind->you level up-> you have a small part of the story.
It should be:
You do the story -> you level up -> you have more story -> you level up

Agreed. The fact that party grinding is becoming the focus of the game is somewhat ridiculous to me, when FF games are known for their stories. Put a bunch of intensive, involving story-filled quests for both solo and parties as the main way of leveling, not "go here and kill this" leves/current quests or "lol grind the same mob for hours" party grinding.Op speaks the truth....

Make it progress exactly as the plot of an offline FF game would.
Although I'm partial to the grind myself, I do find good parties far too common right now. It's just too easy. FFXI was rigid in its party setups, and if you were fighting IT mobs with 5/6, then you could definitely feel the loss of that one member. It's exactly this that makes the grind less fun for me.

I am finding it funny how all the casuals are flipping out on this thread over XI/EQ style leveling being added.
They are adding things for each play style.
Want to solo quest grind they are adding more and more quest each patch, they even made a statement once the basic core changes are done the rate of quest will increase. They are adding dungeons which you can level in, Adding more story lines with company which give SP for rewards. Next patch you are getting public dungeons and bstmen encampments, as well as Ifrit... all might have SP related only time will tell.
Want to group up with friends and explore the world and kill things in the field for great SP, you can go do it as well.
It is sorta greedy for people to get pissed off when SE adds something a large portion of their XI player base wants to see, some might not want it 100% but I hear very very few who would be 100% against it if they had options. People need to get off WoW being the end all be all. Just like the hardcore XI fans need to realize a FFXI-clone is also not the answer it simply will no longer work, people are too use to mainstream now to go back.
The fact of the matter is some people hate the Main Stream style.. it is not revolutionary to them it is pure 100% garbage, why there are several millions who consider wow to be one of the worst mmo ever developed. And on the flip side the new age mmo gamer considers oldschool MMO complete 100% garbage boring games. It is like asking what mmo is better WoW or FFXI, outside this forum the answer is easy... in game if you ask people online would probably be 5:1 FFXI being the preferred game.
The game needs new players and the game needs to bring back their hardcore playerbase which stuck beside Square with XI for almost a decade. Only way to do that is options to add both styles. Choosing only mainstream or Oldschool will cause this game to end in 100% failure.
So in closing why be excited? It is adding an element that a ton of players want, there for adding more options to the game. Adding more things you can do outside of questing and over all increasing the overall population which is a critical problem the game has atm. Square wants to make a game where you can log on and enjoy playing alone, and a game where you enjoy partying up with friends... this change is 100% needed. Atm they are fixing the main problem in the mainstream genre atm, lack of grouping. Once this is added all they need to do is add content... and all groups will be happy.
Don't pretend that there are a "ton" of people who want to grind. That's all the game currently is, and I don't see it very populated do you? A miniscule fraction wants sitting in one spot killing respawns. I'd love for you to show me where this 'ton' of people is hiding. Most people I talk to want actual content, not EXP modifiers on kills.I am finding it funny how all the casuals are flipping out on this thread over XI/EQ style leveling being added.

I'll say it again every game has some short of grind to it depends on the player if they enjoy that kind of grind. Example you have to get enough experience point to level up by defeating X number of monster's or complete X number of quest. It a matter of how they go by making the game fun and challenging to the player. Can anyone come up with a different method's for those two example's that can be done differently raid's are included. Again refer to first sentence and read it again thanks enjoy your type of grind hopefully they add a variety of them and have option's in how we level or develope.
