I'd just like to know how they managed to calm things down prior to this. When I started during Cata, I had no sign that gold sellers existed. No messages, mails, anything. My understanding is that it did exist once and now it's no longer really a thing. My own experiences on Nordrassil and Wyrmrest were such that I never received any communications from them.

I'd like to know what it will take to get the gold sellers to the point where it's no longer worth the cost to fish for customers and instead have them market on external sites where I really can ignore them.

Reduce the size of their market by stopping players from buying gil. At a certain point, it becomes too costly for them, gil becomes expensive to compensate, even fewer players buy, and eventually RMT dries up.

I can't see that happening. That part didn't happen in WoW if the number of sellers is anything to go by.

In FF the players are buying because the nature of the markets in FFXIV makes tempting to buy. It's expensive to reach 4 star crafting and the materials are relatively rare, so the sellers charge (understandably) a high amount for their wares. New player that wants a shortcut to be able to run endgame content or do endgame crafting? Buy gil and pay for the 110 gear or melded foragers set or melded artisan's set.

So do you make the crafting more accessible for players to increase the number of crafters selling? That might help a tiny bit, but probably not enough to be noticed and truth be told. Some players are going to want a shortcut no matter how easy you make it.

The right click > Report Spam option that automatically blacklists would be nice. Couple that with a limitless blacklist and an idea that was mentioned earlier to notify GMs at a certain threshold of reports (or hell, even temp lock the account if 100+ reports are received) and you may see some improvement.

The friend request thing though, this is going to be unpopular, but maybe make it so you can't use certain social features (friend requests, /tell) until you hit a certain level (10?).

I did a quick search and found that they had implemented a right click > report spam during Burning Crusade that apparently did some good.

Blizzard did not, it was an open source program that is the biggest weapon against rmt spam. There are a few in use my favorite was a program called "Bad Boy", it works by screening all incoming chat for key words, symbols, and general quality. It then automatically blocks the message, and reports the sender preventing you from ever knowing you got the message. There are also in game things like the ability to restrict messages from persons below a certain level, chat frequency limiters, and the in ability to share web addresses.

The friend requests suck. Ignoring /Tell is easy (you don't read them), declining the friend requests takes clicks.

My blacklist is full of gil sellers. Literally, my blacklist is full to the brim. I can't mute anymore people. Sometimes just for fun I sing to them in whispers.

Sometimes I cuss them out to see if maybe, just maybe, they'd put up a fight.

Of course, my biggest worry is that I'd get a gil spam whisper, type /r just after a friend whispers me, followed by another gil spam to flood my chat box, and I end up singing something racist or calling my friend a double-blended screwberry twist (censored for profanity reasons).

Turn the tell sound effect off. I only get sound effects for party chat and alliance chat... you know people that I expect messages from. Have your LS or FC replace tell
