New to the game. Do summoners become actual summoners later or in the expansion?

So I decided to play a dragoon (favorite class in tactics) but I was turned off by the rotation, didnt feel very fun having to stick to the same combo.

So I went with my summoner thinking Id actually use summons. Thus far, I find myself hoping im gonna get to be an actual summoner. I know we got carbuncle and "egis" but they feel short of what summoners actually are. I mean since when do summoners use diseases or dots?

Anyways im left wondering will I get to summon the power of ramuh and use a judgement bolt or even an ifrit fireball, something like in previous games. However it doesnt seem to be the case?

I know I could look it up, but I dont want to see my next spells, I want it to be a surprise but its been disappointing. I JUST got tri-disaster only to find out its a.. bind? Tri-Disaster out of all spells, i was kind of left speechless.

So I hear talk of an expansion, will summoners actually get summoner-ish moves? If not, what job is true to final fantasy?

Main SMN here and the idea of SMN for ffxiv is more like warlock from WoW then anything.

That how pretty much the summon going to look like even ramuh would look just like that. In the Ramuh fight he summon adds that are pretty much how it going to look like.

SMN may not change that much from 2.0 to 3.0 the only big change so far we have heard is we switching from critical hit rate/determination. To critical hit rate/Spell Speed but i'll wait for more information on that before anything. There just not that much info on what going to happen to smn. There a live letter coming up soon and most of us main SMN are looking forward to any info on smn.

Too the live letter or more info come out most of us SMN may have lost hope ;(

I don't play summoner myself, but my brother mains it. It is pretty much just as the above poster said. Summoner is pretty much a bad iteration of WoWs warlock. If you are looking for something true to its name and previous iterations of the job in other FF, move along to something else. I hope you guys get a nice overhaul with 3.0, but I am not holding my breath.

A topic frequently talked about in the DPS forum for sure.

I would love to see some changes (not necessarily significant ones), but I'm also not holding my breath.
I'm half-expecting someone to come stampeding in here and say "Summoner is fine the way it is. If you don't like it go back to Dragoon."

No, summoners in the traditional single player JRPG FF games use summons as a limit break sort of skill.. This is an MMO, you can't have such powerful spells at your arsenal every time you cast

At later levels though, you can start controlling your summons (you already can at lower lvls, but there's no reason to) and it'll keep you busy. If you're expecting to be a powerful summoner type the traditional FF games have, that really can't be implemented in an MMO setting where the combat is real time. i.e. You can't stay back and cast away for 3 minutes while your team is protecting you and BOOM! Boss dies in 1 summon.. Just not feasible for MMO.

Oh, but if you're looking for that fancy, special attack.. You should try the limit breaks, you can only use it a couple times in a dungeon, but it is powerful.. That's probably the closest as you'll get to an actual "Summoner" type spell in this game.. There's some speculation about the overhaul of the limit break system, so maybe that'll be something to look forward to for you.

The issue most main smn have is it does not play like a real SMN in the way that we just do dots and the pets are somewhat useless. I myself never played FFXI version of SMN so i can't give my input on it i only main SAM. Overall SMN is a fun job i do enjoy the dots but the pets need to be more useful and they need to fix our MP issue.

In order to make an actual Summoner SE would have to make it more like the Elementalists and mak the Pets the focal point.
I hope SE makes an Actual Summoner in Heavensward.

No ones asking for that. On top of that black mages get both powerful and nice animations. Totally in tune with actual black mages in the FF series. Summoners couldve easily had awesome pets or spells based on summons but watered down... not a WoW lock like the person above said.

Had no idea it was. I barely started playing cause of my love for FF but it was disapointing. I moved to a black mage cause it feels closer to an actual BM.. sadly lighting is a dot for the sake of dots. This game is really making me hate how mmo's water down source material.

The Summoner should've been an Elementalist with the Pet as the focal point with all tier 2 Elemental spells in the expansion.
