    It's both, actually.

    Xenophobia is their refusal to assist foreigners unless their magical invisible tree friends say so. The main scenario quest goes into this in detail.

    Racism is demonstrated in the Lancer and Archer guild quests -- respectively, the lack of trust offered to Duskwights, and the view of Moon Keepers as ignorant savages (and both quest stories have these prejudices coming back to bite them in the ass)

    I've said it before, I'll say it again: Lominsa has no undercurrent of something shady going on. All shady business is conducted in the bright sunlight! What you see is what you get.

    Gridania's less-savory elements are borne primarily of culturally ingrained hostility towards outsiders. Ul'dah, though...just, Ul'dah's got problems man.

    From the beginning I saw Gridania as Elitists (less then Ishgard tho °_°), and Kan-E-Senna is one i like the less from the "state leaders" I just didn't like her from the beginning y.y/

    The biggest popualtion of Elezeen have Ishgard. It is a Elezeen city. Gridania population was always balanced out between Elezeen and Midlanders, because both already lived together during the Gremorra era.
    Gridanias are also less racist and more regionalist.

    So much hostility for Gridania... all they want to do is live peacefully in a forest where they, and everyone they know or love, could until recently be killed for little or no obvious reason through the whims and actions of an overwhelmingly powerful force of nature that only communicates that will through people who deliberately and consciously chose to listen.
    Duskwights and Keepers of the Moon aren't trusted because they refused to live within the structure the Elementals set out, putting everyone in danger. For centuries. Even to this day, though the Elementals were weakened through the destruction of so much of the Shroud. Several quests address the Keepers and Duskwights as poachers and bandits because many of them still refuse to accept the rules and want to maintain "traditional" lifestyles that run counter to the constrictions placed upon Gridania.
    Outsiders feel Gridanians are cold because outsiders represent change, and might not play within the rules of Gridanian society. Adventurers are probably the greatest representation of change, as they don't really follow one path.
    The Lancer questline's Duskwight went out of his way to put himself, you, and others in danger. He wasn't a bad person because he was a Duskwight, he was a Duskwight who was a bad person (for, of course, fairly bad reasons.)
    The Archer questline was that Elvaan chap's pride and bad experiences with a Keeper bandit. The guildmaster made efforts to get him to move on and accept the Keeper who came out from the cold.

    Yes, the presence of the elementals in the 2.x story is weak. It was stronger during the 1.x story. In 2.0 they only showed up during one CNJ quest.

    I hope they get a stronger presence in 3.x again, like they had during 1.x

    This soooo much. Everyone just says outright racism towards Duskwights and Keepers. But it's towards the individuals themselves. Not the whole race. My own take on the drama in gridania to come is something between the padjal themselves.

    Iirc, Dusker racism and displacement does exist within the city. They miss their old homes, too.

    The trees don't want them there.

    To be honest, the current of constant hostility to outsiders from the townspeople as well as the feeling of "the forest is going to have it's revenge at any moment" keeps me from liking Gridania or joining TA on any of my characters. >.>;

    If the WHM questline is anything to go by, the elementals are very capable of destroying everything. I thought the issue with the calamity was that the elementals were more silent/less friendly, which increased tensions between them and the people living there.
