You're right, about it being coolest, etc... But this point you made troubles me. We already have enough trouble with people disrespecting all tanks/healers because of the sadly numerous bad apples, but with even more people playing tank/healer just for the queue times it will drag our collective reputations even lower....

Something really similar happened in World of Warcraft, with the advent of the Death Knight on WOTLK. The end result? DK tanks are stigmatized TO THIS DAY. What worries me more is that they probably won't need you to lvl up a class from lvl 1. Everyone will have access to a lvl 60 tank job easily, YAY. I see it as a real possibility that DRKs will, in the future, have a fame of being bad players that surpass even the Dragoon stigma we have now.

For some, such as myself, it's not that they don't want the responsibility, it's that they have a low level of tolerance for douchebaggery when said douchebags get pissy because the new tank/healer didn't perform perfectly on their first try. So they berate the new tank/healer, even encouraging them to no longer touch a tank/healing class ever again.

I'd love to take up healing and/or tanking, becoming decent at it, I just have a low tolerance for spoiled children.

I agree. I've played PLD since the start, and secondary classes are WHM and SCH. I share your feeling about the number of D-bags. Unfortunately, they represent a disproportionately loud and annoying section of the player population....

Still, I find PLD to be enjoyable because It's not about blindly executing a rotation, the same is true for healer. healer is much more reactive, you have to adjust as you go, and depending on how well geared the DPS/healer is, a tank may have to think on their feet to hold aggro sometimes, either way it keeps you on your toes.

This is the reason people dont play tank classes in mmos and it stems straight from WoW, i refused to tank in that game. In this game however, Ive played a warrior on and off ( mostly on) since 2.0 released and it is extremely rare that anyone has anything to say about how Im playing. If your afraid to tank new content, roll through as a dps a few times and watch a tank who knows what they are doing and then emulate it. If it's new content, everybody is understanding if you screw up and generally don't care.

This. I play DPS because I play this game to relax and have fun, and I don't want to deal with the pressure of the whole group wiping because I made a mistake or didn't know exactly what to do in advance. There could be 1000 choices for tank jobs; it's not relevant.

Funnily enough, though, this is something some MMOs try to address directly. More or less by just making tanks so OP you don't have to do/worry about much. The way FFXIV tends to be so precisely tuned, however, I don't really see that happening here.

FFXIV is probably over-tuned. That's the only way Coil would be fun. There's no fun in just being able to faceroll through supposedly hard content.

The problem, as mentioned in other threads is that people don't want the responsibility of tanking or healing, and those that play tanks/healers just for faster queues, tend to be awful at the content, prioritizing DPS over ... actually doing the job. But there are also plenty of DPS that are awful too. From the bards that play no songs at all, to the summoners who "forget" to summon their pet, or leave it on Obey and use nothing, to melee's who stand in every AOE.

I'd say the average person is just "average" at the game, there are no people who have cleared all the content and are actually good at every single piece of content with every job. And we're lucky that we even get the same game the Japanese get. Every other game out there gets nerfed for us "lazy english speakers", because everyone here feels entitled to solo everything, they must be the single hero of their own story. Just read the first few lines of the OP...

Getting all jobs to 50 isn't a requirement for anything but an achievement as far as I know, so I'd probably just say don't bother and come back to those if you really want to play them. Getting BiS gear... is Final Coil gear. That may very well be a longer grind. 30 minute queues are average for DPS. At launch they were over 2 hours because there was no duty roulette.

Nowhere has the game ever promised you could solo everything. If the OP had 7 friends, they could just plow through everything and there would be no queues for anything except CT. When people feel entitled, they somehow believe that the world should bend to their demands, and make no effort to solve the problem themselves.

On Gilgamesh, you can expect a 7 minute Expert Roulette queue time as a melee dps right now, which I consider acceptable. There are definitely some trials that can have a ridiculous wait. Low level stuff is horrible, over 30 minutes often enough, and I've waited over an hour before when leveling Ninja was the thing to do.

That "other" MMO figured out how to make DPS queue times tolerable, but it was essentially to make tank classes supermen. Squeenix should just bite the bullet and do the same. I honestly couldn't care less if they did DPS job quality damage, I just want to be able to play the game as the class that suits my fancy in the moment.

I'm also trying to get my last 3 classes to 50. I've found the 30 minute wait for a daily lowbie roulette is tolerable. I usually grab a shower while I'm waiting if it's later in the evening, or if it's early, get some yoga in.
