Sorry about your bad luck.
As mentioned before, you really don't need to go for those shiny IV materia for a good relic. It just won't be optimized, but you wouldn't see the difference anyway unless you're a super hardcore min/maxer (which is irrelevant at this point because we can overgear all content in this game, including Final Coil). Working on my second relic right now, and I'm avoiding IVs just for price reasons (also because I'm working on Omnilex/Last Resort I have the liberty of throwing accuracy on because of Coil).
What? The materia pool has never changed. You always had a chance to get elemental materia regardless of what combat gear you converted. To top it all off, I just watched a video about converting that happened BEFORE 2.35 and that you could get good Materia without much hassle, but now the pool to get Materia's has widened! I could get i90 armor, Spiritbond it and only get an Elemental Resistance Materia when I wanted Heaven's Eye Or Savage Might!
Were you around for when 2.0 launched and we only had basic Relics and Relics +1 (now called Zenith)? The forums were awash with people crying about how relics were "too easy to get" and how they "didn't mean anything" because anybody could quickly acquire one.
He misunderstood that point, I think. But there was a point where if you spiritbonded an i90 piece, you would get a IV materia for sure. But you weren't guarranteed a good one. It could've been elemental, skill speed, etc.
In general though, the materia part of the Novus - don't sweat. You don't NEED IV materia. III will be just fine and if you get money later you are always able to change the stats are your gear no matter what stage.
Novus was the relaxing stage for me. I could get 1-2 alex/day very casually or I could grind a bunch if I wanted. Now I guess with the expansion on the horizon people who want to catch up may see it as grind just to move on to the next stage. But I will always hate Animus more. Waiting for FATEs...ugh.
A lot of people already own one or more Zeta . The relic quest being full of grinding , really? Wow! This is new...
You re not special - do the grind just like others did before instead of complaining forever. You already know that i130 IW weapon are almost free now with the EAT in WOD. its more than enough to clear everything in the current content. Its a gift. You can have it really fast.
Plus you can down everything but FCOB with the UAT weapon @110.
I dont see why threads like that still exist. We are not in June 2014.
OP: before you ask, I got my relic long time before PF was introduced (when the "Zenith" was called "+1") and did all the steps before they got nerfed. I met a LOT of people during these grinding sessions. We had tons of fun suffering together. Supporting each other. Laughing about drop rates. Eventually made static groups after. you should try it instead of crying here.
Threads like this will continue to exist as long as the relic grind continues to be a messy, thankless grind. Instead of sweeping problems under the rug as you seem keen to do, addressing them makes a whole lot more sense. Doubly so now that, as you rightly pointed out, I130 weapons are much easier to obtain.
The sooner they address the issue of the relic grind being monotonous, samey rubbish the sooner we can have it replaced with something that's either faster or at the very least more entertaining.
If you plan on putting the best stats into your relic, then you plan on either spending a lot of money or investing a lot of time to be able to craft the armor to spirit bond (which actually nets you gil in the process).
If you don't want to spend all the money, then you don't have to get Tier 4 materia. Coincidentally, if you don't think secondary stats really worth anything, then there's really no point in spending gil on T4 materia, fill up with the T3's and enjoy your new iLV 135 weapon.

I'm a Ninja.
You're getting a relic for Paladin? Just do a three way split of Acc/Det/Crit and call it a day.
Acc till your next meld is a IV, then the same with Det, then fill with Crit.

i130 weapons can be obtained just by afking during 3 CT "raids".
Compared to an optimal Zeta its just a 5/6% dps loss. And for healers/tanks i doubt there s a big difference.
What do you want? The relic is part of the lore. One of the purposes of the 2.0 is to make the WoL re create the relic weapon. we had one step per major patch and the completion took two years.
Relic holding ppl back? No.
You needed to kill titan HM to enter Coil. So the relic was unlocked at the same time than the Coil quest.
People willing to start SCOB asap had T5 i95 weapons at SCOB release or managed to get Levi weapons fast.
Then came the UAT enabling you to cut everything before FCOB without effort.
And now there are free i130, two easy to get i115 and i110 pentameld weapons. You dont NEED the relic so the relic quest doesnt have to be fast. Its already easy and optional.
I thought this was a pretty easy stage personally. Getting 75 alexandrites could be a bit of a pain, but it's even easier now than it used to be (due to the relative drop in price with allied seals) and aside from farming hunts there isn't really much of a way to grind this stage. The materia is pretty much irrelevant, assuming you're not completely broke. You can take a 1% DPS loss and spend 200k, or go all out spending millions and still not actually have BiS because you were ignoring the stats on all of your other gear anyway.
The Nexus stage took me longer and I found it to be much more annoying since you essentially couldn't do anything on a class other than the one you were building a weapon for.
