The betrayal was outlined in the DRG job quests. The first Dragoon led a company to the chasm where Ishgard now stands, fought Nidhogg and ripping his eye out at a treasure.

The Fury, impressed by the spirit of our ancestors, decided it was meet that She make them Her own. So did She appear before Haldrath's sire, a man of courage and integrity named Thordan, and bade him lead Her people to the Promised Land─to what would become the great nation of Ishgard. Their journey brought them to a wide chasm, whereupon Thordan and his people set to building a bridge. It was then that a dark shadow descended upon them─the great wyrm Nidhogg. Heedless of his own safety, Thordan fearlessly charged at the colossal beast. Alas, he was pushed into the chasm by one of his own, a man seduced by the wyrm, and fell to his death.
Taking up his slain sire's lance, Haldrath hurled himself at Nidhogg, even as tears streamed down his face. The confrontation ended when the young man, his hand guided by Halone, landed a mighty thrust that prized out Nidhogg's eye. With a terrible roar of pain, the great wyrm took wing and fled, while jubilation reigned below.

So yeah, this kind of shows that the black-white view we are presented from Ishgard is not completely true.

Whether or not the chasm in which Ishgard stands was Nidhogg's lair remains obscure, and if you'd like to speculate that it was, that's fine, but let's hold off on claiming it as fact for now.

What's strange is that, even though they do recognize they attacked the dragons in the first place (and provoked the war), they still think the dragons are the evil ones because Ishgard is "the holy place". These people just came out of nowhere and attacked the dravanians ffs. and they think the dravanians are the bad guys ?

    my opinion too.

Though this "long term plan" is very likely to be urged to its end faster than expected as the Ascians acknowledged you as a serious threat now. I can sense a huge disaster striking Ishgard soon. Dragons invading might not be their first priority in the near future

(I do hope all of this will conclude into pacific cohabitation of Ishgardians and dravanians in their homeland.)

I'm just gonna point out this has happened in real life and affects modern politics.

No more divine protection against evil, we have to do the stuff by our own strengh.

It's the Echo. I'm not aware of Midgardsormr giving anything for what he's taken aside from his occasional commentary. If he wouldn't even tag in to help out against an Ascian whilst taking our measure, I'm not expecting he's providing any assistance whatsoever until convinced.
