the version is in a file in the /boot folder. If it was damaged or erased, put: "2015.01.09.0000.0001" in a file called: "ffxivboot.ver". I would advise to run a repair immidiately after as you might not be up to date. I don't know how to run a repair but i think all mmog have it.

Does the window pop up immidiately as you launch the game? It could also mean it can't access your update server. I would try again with the firewall off to see if it blocks it and also check if the router could be blocking it.

If you have the guildworks program running it will give you this warning, I advise turning off guildworks until you start up the game. I had that problem aswell and thats how I fixed it.
