The date on what, exactly? Because if you go to the link, on the dev blog entry indicated, it very clearly says "04/01/2015". Another hint would be that the post talks about it being for the Gold Saucer, when the screenshot is the Wolves' Den. As well as the fact that there are like, dozens of minions. Dozens. They also say it's an RTS. They also call it Lord of VirMINION. They even have a picture of what was a previous joke, reiterated for this joke. The possibility of it being for anything other than April Fool's is 0%.

ThIs is an April fools the viangaa minion should be the biggest clue.

However that doesn't mean something like this isn't going to happen, much like the viangaa was an April fools but was based on the fact a new race was coming (the Au ra) this could be suggesting that minion battles will be a thing soon.
