Your own character is so passive because they are suppose to be you. Now then everyone is different so they obviously can't give so much personality to your own character in cut scenes.

Well in theory before we were "invincible" when we had the blessing of light but that got sealed/taken by Midgardsormr in part 1 so we are pretty much a normal adventurer with Echo now. ON THE OTHER HAND we did fight a Ascian without the blessing of light(honestly that shouldn't even be a party fight when they say go after him before the rift closes and im pretty sure it closes fast so having a party was just for the MMO aspect and that's it) So im sure we can take on a few brass blades and crystal braves then run I would feel a bit better with that at least I put up a fight then left because oh the sheer numbers.
Bioware done it with choices in Star Wars The Old Republic and that was my character portraying what I would say in certain situations. If you believe none of the choices they gave are what you would say then pick the passive option ... easy. Also the problem is having a passive character doesn't always equal good. When your character becomes too passive it gets annoying because you have no form of input. Just add choices so things like this wont happen. Star Wars The Old Republic was good for their story and this game is heavily story based so i think they should take a page from Bioware if they want to make a story heavy game with these types of consequences so people can at least act to a certain extent of what they "may" do in that situation.
For example if people think they would fight, allow them to fight and then lead to a scene where too many enemies come and you need to run away. Another option of just running away. This gives the player the choice of what they want "their" character to do. Right now it doesn't even feel like my character because SE are pretty much the ones making the choices and that gets rid of the RPG part (role playing game). So overall all they need to do is add more decisions and choices like they did in Prae and the start of the game. This allowed me to pick what i think my character would say in a certain situation given the choices. If they do this it will feel like more of my character instead of a character I made for SE so they can make a story for me and wonder why my character did that and continue to wonder why he did this and that.

Quite frankly, that's exactly why I love that our character was powerless this time around. It's boring as heck when our character is the Big Hero who swoops in to save the day and fix things every single time. There's no real sense of danger or tension when we know our character is going to come in and hero it up and emerge victorious against whatever new threat we might be facing.
For once, our character couldn't just make it all better by swinging their weapon around. It's boring writing, and perhaps more importantly, it's bad writing if your hero never faces something that they can't win against.

@Airget : I disagree; they could kill all leaders of syndicate, then this ppl would be headless! also Raubahn is leader of Uldah, people would llisten to him! So they could work together and fight but they doesnt. also "Lolorito to put 1billion 3 billion 500 Billion gil for the head of Merlwyb or Kan-E-Senna"; I doubt that could happen! if he had so much gil,he would buy ppl to kill Raubahn,Nanamo &co already and easy! and kill the murders to not have any connection left! The way they left the party so easy and fast shows that they had plan or something?! Kan-E-Senna would always try to help. And the people from Ishgard knew its trap and are 100% still there.
So they judge about our character just because he was in same room when Sultan got poisned? that sound stupid?SE just made a lot of mistakes here.
Some people wrote we should not be allowed to enter Uldah anymore, which is true! Do not make a story how you escape there and hide and then suddenly can go there whenever you want
I thought our character will have fighting scene against Illbert.
Also who won in this fight? Raubahn or Illbert? since I don't see Illbert after Raubahn is on jail.
Then if people had unfinished business (class quests, crafting classes, etc), you just effectively dead blocked them from finishing. You also forget that there's seasonal events Square likes to do and some of them require going to Ul'dah to complete them. Now how would you feel if you were told "Oops! You're not allowed to go into the city to do a quest because lol story reasons!"?
There's immersion and there's annoying and angering a player when the game doesn't let them progress just for the sake of immersion.
I dunno if this is pointed out or not, but where did you get the idea we fled to the Black Shroud at all? We were clearly dropped off at Black Brush Station (Nevermind the fact we were dropped off at the bridge near one of the bloody gates of Ul'dah).
Why can't we, the characters, tell the NPCs the truth? We were there, we witnessed everything. If the Syndicate is trying to hide stuff from the people, why don't we tell them the truth? Jenlyns thinks she's sick? Why don't we tell him what we saw? I would think the Syndicate wouldn't want any witnesses around telling people what exactly happened.
They are actually scared of you, while you were attending to the whole event your character was without weapon so they could seize you without much of a fight. Some people wrote we should not be allowed to enter Uldah anymore, which is true! Do not make a story how you escape there and hide and then suddenly can go there whenever you want
Now that you're back and fully geared at that they won't dare to move a finger as the whole situation changed, of course you still can't just go in and raid the royal chambers as you'd still have to deal with a whole army and they will kill you with just numbers.
We are powerful but we can't fight forever.
It would be a blood bath but ultimately lead to our seizure.
During the escape. We can see that Papalymo blasts the gate shut, but why not do it from the other side? I think it was unnecessary for them to even try to stall for time. The gates should have been enough at the least. :U
Not really, seeing how they did catch up with you after all.

At first I was upset at how the story turned out (mostly because now we'll have to wait about three months for a freaking resolution). But thinking about it now, it makes sense:
Willingly turning yourself in basically helps you out in the long run, because trying to attack the Braves/Blades wouldn't help your case. Sure you get to be a badass unstoppable machine, but for all we know, for ever Brave/Blade that is corrupt, there's another who is probably just doing their job and killing him/her wouldn't do well for your reputation.
Like it or not, despite knowing how corrupt the Syndicate is, they still hold (most if not all) influence due to the Monetarists. Basically Ul'dah makes Gotham City look like Metropolis especially now in terms of corruption. As awesome was for Raubahn to cut the little bastard, it gave the Monetarists ammunition to label him a traitor and imprison him. We're not sure if Raubahn did beat that Hypocrite. For all he knew, he could've suffered from blood loss even if no blood was shown, he did just lose an arm.
Speaking of Ilberd, I actually hope that he didn't lose and is still alive. Just so I can have the honor of putting him to the blade myself (After proving the Scions' innocence of course). Him and that traitorous Wood Wailer turned traitorous ungrateful Crystal Brave. Well, "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me..."
As for Kan-E-Senna and Merlwyb, I was ready to lose all respect I have for them for bailing on the Scions, but if you go to Gridania and Limsa Lominsa, you'll notice that the Braves are gone, meaning that their first priority was to remove them from their respective city states before they could try something.
