In your case you knew something he didn't, namely that you would be a better choice for the DK position than your bard friend. Him rage-quitting over that was silly, but from his perspective the assignment as he knew it was correct.
That's where communication comes in. After the third wipe because of poor timing on waaaay more than just DK, he should have made an attempt to find the problem. Tanks are usually the unofficial team leaders because of their forward position in battle so it's extremely poor leadership not to communicate. And while admittedly I was kind of childish about it my self it was proof of his lack of qualification for the tank role that he refused to listen to his team even after several attempts ended in failure.
