Stay with me here, I know this thought might be pretty radical to someone whose so used to being able to faceroll hard modes / hildebrand fights, but maybe, just maybe, and this is the crazy part, maybe they actually want you to think, use 1% of your mostly dead braincells and play your job to some competence in one low tier fight in the entire game. QQ more please. Actually don't because they'll just nerf this like they nerfed demonwall for being "too difficult."

As of right now, most people are still learning how to truly down this fight in a reasonable amount of time. I've been seeing all sorts of different strategies employed to make it happen so far. I think the best one I've seen suggested is one Tank and one Healer on the cannons while the other Healer does nothing but heal and the other Tank grabs adds, while all DPS focus on the boss and add AoE to the mobs.

I'm rather mixed on this fight myself. On one hand, I welcome a challenge. But on the other hand, this is part of the Main Scenario. I already claimed this fight as the fight that'll separate people from being able to make it to Heavensward or not, tee hee. So I can't help but feel that somewhere down the line, this fight will take a slight nerf anyway, regardless of how everyone else feels about this fight.

I managed to clear the fight myself. Took about 4 wipes before landing in a DF party that got it down. Thinking about it, I think they DID use the "One Tank and one Healer on cannons" strategy, but I wasn't paying too much attention to that because I was on Dragonslayer duty. And boy, did I enjoy dropping them missiles on the bad boy.

Regardless, the content just came out, so it'll be awhile before we see this go one way other. And I'm sure most players are hoping this fight just remains as is while it gets easier anyway as the majority of the player base ultimately decides on the best strategy for bringing it down in a reasonable amount of time. I do find it funny though that there are people in here claiming this fight isn't hard when it actually IS one of the harder fights in this game, lol.

My only disappointment with this fight is there being no loot rewards at the end. Otherwise, I thought the fight was awesome.

PS: The real majority of the difficulty though comes from landing in groups where people end up being derps sadly. Partially a reason why I avoided MMO gaming back then.

Just need to get good group, I cleared it first time via a random DF group and had a few other new players to it in our one. As long as know how/when to use big/small cannons the fight is doable. Just read a guide, the fight is not that complex...then hope you get group where others bothered to look into strategy before start. The fight itself was interesting and as long as don't get a lazy group who never bothered to read up on it then should be doable for most people.

It's rarely a problem with strategy, just that people simply stink at DPS and aren't attacking the boss nearly enough. Either they get distracted by adds that the cannon should be killing or adds that you can safely ignore. If you know your DPS sucks and want to continue hiding in groups like you always do, do everyone a favor and put your hand up for cannon duty.

Challenging content does 2 things, it promotes players to improve to pass said content, or it causes players who don't think they need to improve to whine/complain/rage quit.

Unfortunatelly theres too many of the latter as this post highlights.

Instead of taking the attitude of "How can I improve to pass the content" It's much easier to complain and cry for simplifying content so they don't have to push themselves. Seriously, it is a good outlook to have, self improvement, and that more importantly applies to RL. Get into that attitude with less signifacant things like hobbies and it becomes second nature for everything else.

So with how much people have been complaining about the difficulty of the trial on the forums and ingame chat, I was really looking forward to it and it being a real challenge.

Then I finally got to try it out and easily downed it first try via DF with a group of randoms that had never downed it before and most being completely new. So no, I don't think it is too hard. Most of the stuff seemed very obvious to me with the exception of snares and dragon killer, but all that needs is one person to explain it at the beginning and then its no problem.

Communitcate at the beginning, assign roles/tasks and follow those roles and the trial is easy.

It was fun and different and I definitely want to try it again to see how fast the group can get the boss down, but it is not as hard as it is being made out to be by some.

Personally I think the only reason why this works for people is because it only requires half the party to know how it works, with that half being the 2 tanks and 2 healers, often the types who pay attention to mechanics and try to make a fight smoother. The DPS just want to pewpewpew.

We had a DPS who, even after 4 wipes at best getting the boss down to 25%, just wants to keep stabbing the boss, even after everyone agrees (except that one DPS) that the cannons and dragonslayer is the key to the fight. Then as I kite the adds (I was tank) under the boss, coming closer and closer to the cannons, I find that nobody, absolutely nobody are on the cannons.

Once the cannons are destroyed, DPS starts to "think" and redirect firepower towards the adds. I keep mentioning the cannons, and one DPS says the cannons are useless, its range is so small that it can't even hit the dragon when the dragon is doing the cone attack on the cannons. (Turns out the DPS uses a controller and have no idea that he needs to target the cannon.) So we fail for a full hour because our DPS weren't clever enough to make use of the mechanics nor strong enough to burn the boss without making use of the mechanics.

The best strategy? All DPS just blooddy go and wait at the cannons. Only attack the boss after cannons are destroyed. Once the shield is down, DASH to the next set of cannons. Seriously. The cannons hit for 2000 a hit as AOE plus a slow shell letting you land more hits. 5 seconds extra time on the cannons is probably better than a 400dps dude whacking away on the boss for 30 seconds.

Use the cannons. Wait for the chains before hitting dragonslayer. And you probably don't even need to put DPS on the dragon.

    In my experience.

1st try - Pure DF Only took me 1 death to analyze the fight. Doesnt take a genius. Everyone who was blind to the fight i gave out their roles, and we passed on 3rd try after being more familiar. 1st clear was exstatic.

2nd try - Did it with a group of friends. They were low leveled but didnt bother me. Wiped multiple times, seems like we could keep coordination :/

3rd Try - PF, found out 3/7 were old Ex FC members and an LS member i know very well. I cant remember the last time we queued for anything, but we beat it in 1 try, with 2 people 1st timing it, and one was high on pain killers (no joke, idk why). Funnier thing boss was at 12% after 3rd ward, the DPS was crazy, and coordinating was tight. Was funny and fun.

Personal opinion, the fight was definitely a welcomed mix up of a trial, really enjoyed the hell out of that Trail, reminded me a bit of Monster Hunter, cant wait what else the game will throw at us next

See that Monster Hunter training came into play. Love using the Dragonator bit. My only complaint about the fight is the same with Keeper of the Lake, these fights are a bit too long. Overall it was fun.

Stuff like this is the reason why FFXIV is becoming a filthy casual game outside of endgame raiding.
