Thread: Revelations from Patch 2.55 [SPOILERS]

I think one of the issues is we as players had a pretty keen idea on what was going to happen in advance. I think if there was an issue it was they gave us too many hints prior to the patch on what was going to go down. Even the cup on the patch trailer was practically a spoiler.

We were expecting Nanamo to die which naturally made it hard to write that scene without it looking obvious. We are seeing it from our context as players rather than the context of the characters in game. If anything I think they really need to tell us less in advance. Having said all that I still have found from many reactions that many people didn't expect things to go quite the way they ended up going. Nanamo dying sure, but everything else blowing up as much as it did was a surprise to many.

Backseat storytelling has always bothered me a lot. I tend to see it happen a lot in e-peen stroking RP communities who insist that their Mary Sue/Gary Stu character is Super Saiyan 4 and would have just killed all their opponents with a single glare. It's frankly embarrassing. It also reminds me of the rampant weeaboo QQing from back when Midgardsormr was first introduced and people were screaming about how the Japanese language version was "corrupted" into the inferior English version (when in fact, it was the other way around). While the storytelling is not without its flaws, I don't think using your Dreadwyrm Oars of Stroking +1 to murder everyone would have been a better solution to the 2.55 scenario. If you want to write fanfiction about your own power fantasy version of the ending, you're welcome to it, but leave it on FF.net or the General Discussion forums. This is the lore forum; a forum for real in-game lore, not your fanwank.

Edit: You don't have your weapon until you Cid lands you in Coerthas and you get off the enterprise.

You actually get it back after the caravan drops you off at Black Brush Station. Presumably Pipin got your weapon(s) for you when he was freeing Alphinaud.

Regardless, that's... not really the point. Point is you had your weapons confiscated before going to meet Nanamo in private, which doesn't feel particularly odd or unfair to me.

Game of Thrones er, rather A Song of Ice and Fire is not the darkest series I've ever read. It's around the lower-middle end of the spectrum, as I see it, and perfectly capable of ending in a moderately uplifting manner and without everyone dead on the floor. Then again, I've read series where every single main character was dead on the floor at the end (and they were kids!), so my perspective is skewed.

FFXIV is trying, but doesn't quite yet understand the logic to how GRRM handles characters (and death).

I thought his logic was to literally flip a coin? Or have I been misinformed?

But, yeah, even not having read GRRM's stuff, I've seen plenty darker than what FFXIV has done so far.
