    Quick Question (Noob)

This is my first real MMO , I've been playing for a year now and I'm starting to hear this word ''Benchmark'' as the expansion nears. What exactly is a benchmark ? Do we play and test the game ? Is it Cut Scenes from the expansion ? Is it anything to Ps4 players ? What is a Benchmark ?

Benchmark is a way to gauge performance through a test. If you look up graphic card specs and cpu specs, you will come across some. As for games, it is a way to see how well you computer can handle the game and what settings you should play on, or in some cases, where the system lacks in order to upgrade the computer.

There isn't one for the ps3 or ps4 since those are handle by the game creators.

It's an app that simulates the game and scores your computer based on the settings for graphics and how well your computer does with your hardware. You can download the one from 2.0.

Benchmarks are usually programs that run various tests that determines how well your computer can handle certain things like lightning, graphical fedelity, shadows, numerous character models on screen, etc. In laymen's terms, the benchmark people are talking about for FF14 contains DirectX11, which is a major improvement over the game's current use of DirectX9 (better textures, renders water better, and other small features) and said benchmark will help people determine whether or not their PCs can handle the features that DirectX11 will use. The benchmark is also going to contain a character creation feature, similar to what you went through in your first character, except it will also contain the new Au Ra race so that people can see for themselves if they want to play as one or not.

It is essentially a piece of standalone software to test performance of something, in this case the game on the hardware that it is run on, your computer.

Normally they run a serious of scenes that are calculated in realtime by your hardware and track thing like memory/GPU/CPU load, frames per second, etc. At the end they assign a numeric rating for your hardware, the higher the better.

With this one a sample of the character creator is included to create a character that will appear in the scenes that are run and it will include the new race, the Au Ra.

Also, as far as I know the benchmark is a PC only thing.

    PS4 users don't get this ?

And thanks for all the answers

I'm not really ''tech savy'' and I play PS4 just thought I'd ask what a benchmark was and yes I could have googled it but I wanted to see the definition in its pertain to FFXIV

PS4 players don't need a benchmark to gauge their consoles' performances. All of them are identical in hardware structure; the purpose of a benchmark is to test performance on various systems, aka. PC's. Not every PC is the same, which is why benchmarks exist: for consumers to gauge whether or not a hardware change is in order.

If you want to see the Au Ra yourself, you can easily download the benchmark for it without running it for a test.
