Frankly, the decline of plate started when a crossbow could hurl a bolt with enough force to penetrate it. After that it just came down to increasing ease of use of mechanical/chemically-assisted projectile weapon that could replicate the piercing power which then culminated in black powder weaponry that the average foot-soldier could use without too much specific training that we saw plate armor relegated to parade uniform.
Damage types work.
Example: When a crab goes down into lockdown mode, you can use a piercing type skill to get past the shell and inflict damage.
Didn't hammers already pwn the shit out of plate?
That's interesting about the crabs in the defensive mode. I never understood why some of my attacks would deal damage and some wouldn't. But if Feint is supposed to be piercing damage, coming from Lancer, it would explain why my standard attacks as a Marauder might have done very little damage, yet Feint did what seemed to be full damage.
