What majority? SMNs are the least played job in the entire game. Why? FF14s Summoner is a poor mans Summoner. You get boring abilities, boring rotations, boring summons which should be the main wow factor of the damn job I might add since its called a SUMMONER. FF11 Summoner may have had issues but it was true to what previous games were and visually nice to look at. The only time I'm reminded I'm supposed to be controlling a part of a Primal is during enkindle. But its too bad it has a ridiculous cooldown.

The silent majority don't come on to forums to bitch about a job on a game. If they did I'm sure they'd say something along the lines that "Summoner" works as a DPS, but it certainly does not give off the proper look (Pet Wise) or feel of traditional FF Summoner's. I personally would like to see more focus on pet damage and Summoner overall utility because currently Scholar has what we have and more.
I know this isn't FF11, but its iteration of summoner (when I played the level cap was 75) to me seemed more satisfying to play. While the pets auto attack damage left something to be desired they had plenty of utility ranging from AoE buffs/healing, debuffs and burst damage all stemming from the Blood Pacts. They could tie something akin to this with the Aetherflow Mechanic some way or another. If they could travel down this direction with the job it may prove to be more pleasing to those looking for a more traditional feel at least gameplay wise.
So... you're all complaining that the mechanics around SMN revolving around the current Egi isn't as 'bombastic' as you expect it to be?
Tell me, how many SMNs have you seen actively controlling their pets, i.e. making them on Obey and manually activating important skills and spells?
When played properly, SMNs are actually on par with BLM, albeit we have to do a lot more button pressing than them and our rotations are more complex. We can't just fling Ruin II all day long, but BLMs can fling Blizzard III all day long and still be considered quite destructive.
I love to play as a SMN and I agree that the Egi's should be revamped to suit them more into the rotation. Right now, there is no sense in putting Ifrit on Obey if you don't care about the stun diminish. Plus, Garuda is the only one anyone ever play with because of her +5 DoT ticks on your DoTs, making more time to fling more ruins.................... But on the SMNs themselves, I can only see more variety skills for the Aetherflow skills. Enkindle needs a shorter cooldown or stronger potential.
I like the SMN as it is. But it is certainly far from perfect.
Plus, if you haven't figured it out already, Garuda-egi can add 15 secs to your poison potions. It increases your DPS by quite a lot.
When played properly

Visual complaints aside, I'm more worried about Summoners scaling atm, groups I see, constantly for endgame, are saying SMN atm does NOT in fact dps on par with BLM. That proper BLM vs proper played summoner will outplay the summoner. Poison Pot is nice perk for adding to dps, but to be conditioned to use that just to be competitive has me really worried. Very often i've had more than one group tell summoners: "Summoner has very hard job justifying the caster slot instead of BLM." When a lot of these parties only run with 1 casting slot and save the rest for a bard and 2 melee. This close to the xpac I do foresee changes, but currently a domino effect has starting to take root towards the job in general in regards to groups forming.
this class is a dot-heavy class. seeing that in the near future, they are planning to adjust dot damage based on spell speed, smn dps will increase, overall. by how much and if it will be able compete with that of blm, i dunno.
People who don't like the Summoner complain that they are Aesthetically an Arcanist with Fester. The problem with being a DoT heavy class is Scholar does everything Summoner's can do but so much bett and since there is 1 caster slot the Black Mage is the default choice because bringing a Summoner would be redundant when a Scholar brings the DoT DPS as well as healing support through shield healing. Summoner should be more pet focused and include the Egi and Summoning Magic in the rotation. Enkindle's cool down should be reduced to 120s and be tied to the Egi performing it. Summoner's should have a Dot phase and a Burst phase where under the influence of Aetherflow the Summoner becomes the Primal and consumes Aetherflow stacks to perform their special attacks and without any Aetherflow stacks the Primal is useless because they can only auto attack.
