For one, the 22 jobs it had were completely unique to each other. No one job was alike to the one next to it, they all had different roles and responsibilities. In this game, all the jobs play the exact same way. 1-2-3 and a dot and you're good. The secondary thing is that you leveled and that it wasn't known as the tutorial, it was the game. Leveling and the game went hand in hand. So you didn't just level to the cap and then begin to play the game, there were things to do at every level. This game? 1-50 = glorified tutorial where everything happens after 50.

Gear. You get sets in this game and then in 6 months, you get a completely new one, dumping your old one at the GC.
In XI, you get tons of equipment that you were supposed to use for specific things and macro change out. Basically, when you went WHM to something, your only gear on you would be your various WHM gear sets.

The lore is...really really involved and expanded in that game. FFXIV is just getting started but even so, the lore in this game isn't nearly as deep as XI in my opinion. It uses other FF games to pull people into things for easy bang and buck. Like the raid towers... In XI, those are original concepts fueled by original bosses and mobs. In XIV, it's the original FFs.

XI peeps think that this game is a copy of WoW in a lot of ways. I agree with them on those points.

And XI still does have people paying for it. The content is stopping so that the company can better focus its assets elsewhere and stop being so divided. I'm guess that they decided that they finally wanted to pull the rest into XIV and give it their all.
