Re-balance it for solo play and let people play it privately or with friends. The Borderlands model.
Not that it would be easy to do obviously.
Also, I would like more games set in Vana'diel

You can play it solo now, you can get copies of characters in game to summon and do stuff with they are called trusts

Pretty sure the petition starter just gave up.
Perhaps the best thing is to offer a legacy player style discount subscription to FFXI players who have yet to move to FFXIV? Heck, nominate a world or two as FFXI refugee centers so the players can keep their community together as they move to FFXIV...

The problem is the fact that the people who are most enamored with XI have no love for XIV as they are two fundamentally different game designs. Therefore, XIV wouldn't be the game for them to come to if they're looking for the XI experience. Unfortunately, with the way games are designed now, finding a game similar to XI will be very difficult.
I know, and I do, honestly, feel their pain. I have lost a game before due to a very early shut down, and there isn't anything quite like it, although FFXIV is probably the closest fit. I was just thinking that it would be a nice gesture to the players who have shown continued loyalty to SE with FFXI. Granted not everyone will want to transition, but it would still be a good way for SE to show that they are different from most other game companies, and return the loyalty their customers have shown them. The problem is the fact that the people who are most enamored with XI have no love for XIV as they are two fundamentally different game designs. While I can appreciate said gesture, I know some of the more elite crowd of XI will look at it as a spit in the face. "What, you want us to play that TRASH?" would be one of the responses (I can think of one very particular individual who would be like that).I know, and I do, honestly, feel their pain. I personally wouldn't said appreciation campaign as I played XI from Wings of the Goddess to when XIV was released and enjoyed it greatly. It's a great game that's unfortunately very unfriendly to new players and thus not really marketable in the current MMO meta.
Supposedly the two cellphone apps they're working on for XI's continuation are just that - a single player client as well as a multiplayer based lobby to adventure into Vana'diel with. I'm curious to see more about these.

What made ffXI so unique and different from ff14? I looked at ff11 website and looks like alot of the stuff fromf ff11 are in ff14 and a imagine future jobs coming for ff14 will be modeled after ff11 jobs.

For one, the 22 jobs it had were completely unique to each other. No one job was alike to the one next to it, they all had different roles and responsibilities. In this game, all the jobs play the exact same way. 1-2-3 and a dot and you're good. The secondary thing is that you leveled and that it wasn't known as the tutorial, it was the game. Leveling and the game went hand in hand. So you didn't just level to the cap and then begin to play the game, there were things to do at every level. This game? 1-50 = glorified tutorial where everything happens after 50.
Gear. You get sets in this game and then in 6 months, you get a completely new one, dumping your old one at the GC.
In XI, you get tons of equipment that you were supposed to use for specific things and macro change out. Basically, when you went WHM to something, your only gear on you would be your various WHM gear sets.
The lore is...really really involved and expanded in that game. FFXIV is just getting started but even so, the lore in this game isn't nearly as deep as XI in my opinion. It uses other FF games to pull people into things for easy bang and buck. Like the raid towers... In XI, those are original concepts fueled by original bosses and mobs. In XIV, it's the original FFs.
XI peeps think that this game is a copy of WoW in a lot of ways. I agree with them on those points.
And XI still does have people paying for it. The content is stopping so that the company can better focus its assets elsewhere and stop being so divided. I'm guess that they decided that they finally wanted to pull the rest into XIV and give it their all.
