I think FFXIV has a very good controller scheme but it will never be as good as mouse & keyboard.
this game needs at least 3 action bars to play your job to its full potential.
targeting with a controller is no match to mouse & keyboard as well.

I 100% Disagree with this. The controller already has more Button slots then we have abilities, and even more so on some jobs then others because of less useful abilities, etc. my DRG for example has 3 or 4 empty slots, because i just dont have any other abilities to put in them. Why would you need 30 buttons for one job? I just dont see how you would, Unless you have multiple slots with the exact same ability, And that would again make me ask, Why?

only because pets
Yeah ill concede to this, Pet classes like SMN and SCH are better off with a lot of hot bar space. and Healing in general is just easier with Mouse over macros, but for the rest of the classes, controller performs just as well if that's what you're used to using.
I just refuse to accept an answer of "you need 3 hotbars to be good at your job"

I have 2.5 seconds to switch between action bars.
That's more than enough. And targeting is very easy. I may not have the immediate precision a mouse selection provides, but I've never been in a situation where it was needed. Not yet at least.
The issue with needing 3 bars to play to the fullest is more related to the pet bar than anything else since it adds a ridiculous number of options that you can use to optimize pet performance. For non pet classes 2 cross bars are sufficient.
That said, one of the Heavensward interviews with Yoshi talked about this issue a little and it seemed like they might be trying to do something else to make more commands available easily, not sure how that will work, but perhaps it will help for the pet classes.
I only use Keyboard and Mouse for Sim City 4 and Civilization 5. Everything else gets the controller. The PS4 Dualshock controller is the best I have ever layed my hands on. I've even tried the various Xbox controllers in the past.
I can't imagine trying to play FF14 with keyboard and mouse. I'm so glad it allows for controller use otherwise I wouldn't have tried it! There is a reason why this game is my first MMO and the controller is that reason.
That's really only true for pet jobs because of the large number of extra actions maneuvering pets and activating 2 to 3 pets unique abilities.
If your not a pet job (to many buttons) or a healer (player selecting for actions), then controller easily matches or bests keyboard/mouse combinations. You can play every job save the above with 2 hotbars, 32 buttons easily and that includes redundant actions on each bar. (I duplicate basic spam actions like heavy shot or primary combo on both bars so I can continue rotation while toggling hotbars to access more abilities).
It's all preference in the end mostly. I was a console gamer growing up, 1st real mmo was xi on ps2 with controller. Migrated to PC, now play 14 controllered. My coil statics from t1 to t13 have had a mix of kb/mouse, kb only, and controller users. There was never some discrepancy between us. They all work if you have half a brain to create a logical setup for your actions.
But controllers forever win the comfort award. Sit back. Relax. You don't have to be upright ergonomically correct at a desk. Most of us do that at work. Relax at home with a controller in whatever position you want.
