Kiwi here. Is this a freaking joke? The collectors edition is more expensive than buying a Vita. Absolutely disgusting.

I think everyone needs to just calm down and think things through with a cooler head - this is just one online retailer selling it (an online retailer I admit I've never even heard of) - stores like EB Games and JB Hifii have not got preorder info for it yet (as SE themselves have stated), meaning there is no competition, and thus, this single retailer has decided to take advantage of it and set the price high. It's simple capitalism here, they want to make a profit. Once EB and JB get it though, expect the price to be somewhat more acceptable.

Local Retailers AND Government, they set taxes on types of product, when SHIPPING IT INTO THEIR COUNTRY. Australia if I am not mistaken has a higher taxation rate on import, parallel import restrictions, there are a lot of things, its not JUST the retailers in question; but a whole lot of mess that no one seems to want to talk about in your country (Australia in particular). If you feel so adamant about this issue you should not look at the developer (Square-Enix in this case, they are not the ones marking it up) but rather at your COUNTRY, because all the rules they have put into place is allowing retailers to price product at a higher dollar amount to make cost (selling one video game nets around 3-5 USD profit, that means 3-5 goes to the retailer, the rest is the cost of developing the game. If you want to read more about it--and I recommend it if you are living in those countries--here is a link.

I get you're upset about having to pay the price (literally) on these products, but again if you feel strongly about the matter you should bring it to your governing official's attention, to see about change.

Yes I am completely aware of the issue. My point is SE has NOT given the option to purchase THIS SE game from other retailers to avoid this practice. I can purchase a multitude of SE games from other distributors.
My second issue is that SE can supply our retailers but can't supply the individual consumer? I can purchase items directly from Valve, Blizzard, Bioware just to name a few. What limits them to ship from their own distributor to us? What trade-by laws are specifically restricting them?

No, read the article. A credible source says it is in fact a bit of both, retailers are doing it but its because the government has set it up to be that way. Retailers won't change unless there is change in the law that lets more retailers offer competitive prices.
Sadly I cannot speak to the inter-relations of SE and your government, or where SE manufactures product and your government. We just don't know that information and that information sadly will NEVER be disclosed to use forum goers. They did say it was going to be available and it was just because their distributor doesn't do business with your country doesn't mean you can blame them. There could be something deeper than we don't care about you--which there definitely is--I mean how absurd is it to think that a company that it's sole existence is to make money--doesn't want it? There is some legal matter which is stopping this from happening.
I should note that all the companies you listed in your example are American companies too, Australian/American relations are pretty good, iirc. Maybe Japan and Australia aren't?

Kotaku is a pile of shite. I assume EB games when to them to give them the "reason" why they are forced to charge so much.

If anything our trade agreement is better with Japan than those other countries.

lol, Chiramu, your opinion is fact. I'm offering intellectual insight, I can Google scholar the information if you prefer it that way. You can hate EB all you want, HOWEVER; EB is owned by GameStop (like they 100% control EB, GameStop/EB does NOT do franchises only corporate) and you don't see GameStop listing prices like that in other countries.
Like I said its more than just a retailer thing. You can refuse to see the facts all you want, but they are still facts.

EB games is a franchise in Australia, also a poorly run one. Why are you claiming to be the all-knowing entity and everyone who doesn't agree with you is an ignoramus? I didn't give my money to EB games or any Australian retailer, you obviously are not Australian so you don't know how it is for us you are spouting words from across an ocean and expect us to listen.lol, Chiramu, your opinion is fact.
