    Materia onto weapon queston

So I'm raising an alt, and have an axe for her. It has 2 slots for materia. Now I know if you put some in it'll turn red, I assume that means that it wait useless. Is there any way to tell what I can put into it without wasting materia?

Red doesn't necessarily mean useless. It means the amount of stats the materia would give is over the stat cap allowed for the item.

Usually you want to put stats different from what's already on the item since those stats will already be capped or close to it. So if it has accuracy, you'll want to add crit or det. If it has vitality, you'll want to add strength.

Aside from what's already been said, there is also a way to directly answer you question.
When you're melding/requesting meld, look near the top of the menu, it will show you how much of the stat will actually go on the weapon. Try it!

This was helpful for myself as well! I've been slowly trying to get my 50 BTN better geared but was having troubles understanding why material was red, or the text was red, and some was green. I couldn't fully figure it out.

Subsequently if anyone is on Exodus and willing to materia meld my lvl 50 gear that would be great!

When it comes to figuring out materia melds for max level gear you should absolutely make use of http://ffxiv.ariyala.com/

At lower levels, the hq versions of items are usually already at meld cap so you won't be able to meld much stats onto those. That's why it shows the red.

Some can take in a couple points here and there and in that case it'll show you the number, also in red most likely, then you can try to find a lower tier materia that gives the exact number of stats so you don't have any waste (unless higher tier materia is cheaper, which does happen)
