required rank is just dumb and serve no purpose.
This is actually how gear worked in Alpha. You couldnt wear it unless you were the right class/disciple and the right rank. I much prefer that system.
The choice in being able to wear whatever you want is stupid. Because the best choice is always the piece closest to your level without going over. So technically it's not a choice at all.

I agree, I remeber in ffxi looking forward to a new level when I could get diffrent gear(though mine was also new looking gear) I am one of those who sometimes wears stuff above my level, but am mostly now going back to my lvl stuff. I know there are alot of people out there that like being able to wear what ever lvl stuff they want, but I for one would like having the restrictions.
granted adding the adjusted stats would be good, but still infavor of restrictions to lvl/class
For a new player to fully gear up in rank 10ish gear, they are looking at spending 150k gil. This isn't reasonable as it takes like 2 hours and 5 leves to get to rank 10.
EDIT:
If gear was restricted by level then people would be forced to create/recycle/buy lower level gear. Thus drastically dropping the price of lower level gear, making it easier/ more fun for new players.
This exactly!....lol would be kinda funny if there was an option somewhere in the game where you could see all the players who have equipped the gear before.... could see this either adding or lowering value of gear LOL!!!



I have always been in the camp of Encourage players to wear gear at optimal level rather then force them to.
The decrease in durability loss once at or over optimal was a big step in the correct direction. I hope that anything related to materia be it bonuses from the rocks or just gaining spirit bond on the piece will only occur after optimal.
I will agree bigger idiot labels on gear would help as well. though it think there have been rumblings about that before.

There is one solution to that and i think that this is what SE is currently working on. First the whole idea that you can equip wtv you want was somewhat of a bad idea and now it cannot be changed because theres tons of players with much lower rank then what they have equipped. Changing the required rank would prevent these players from using their current gear and if they are out of gil then they would be pretty much screwed.
The solution is Job specific gear. SE will release sets of gear that are specific for jobs and these will come with a level restriction. They can leave the rest of the gear we got now the way it is, it will be used as complementary gear, in between stuff... something to buy when you dont find a piece of armor for your required level or that you can share between your classes without purchasing new gear.
Now SE should think really hard about this to not screw up the balance. They need to make job/rank specific gear more powerful and desirable then the random gear.


i always thought that if they were gonna allow lowbies to wear high gear they should have a movement penalty. a few ranks slow you down, 10 ranks and you cant move.
