    Cannot install the game

I am not the one having an issue. A friend of mine who im trying to get into the game is having this issue.

He has downloaded the ffxivsetup.exe file to install the game, he runs it as administrator as well

When he loads the file, it asks him to update his directx files. He goes through the directx installer, completes it and closes the window, ffxivsetup.exe asks him to update his files again.

This happens in an endless loop with no way to bypass the directx setup. We've tried installing the directx 9.0c enduser runtime from June 2010 to get 9.0 in incase its one of the famous directx11 issues with windows 7 but that didnt work

    Any ideas?

Make sure that .NET 3.0 is installed and up to date. IIRC, the installer was built around 3.x. Forget the details for Win7, but for Win8 only 4.0 is installed by default and you have to go into Programs/Features, Turn Windows Features on/off and enable .Net 3.0. Think it was listed as a legacy item in Win7.

Ive read this post and see that a solution was reinstall windows 7 but this was also with a pre-installed version of the game, cant even get any files to download yet.

If anyone has any other ideas it would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried just installing directx directly from Microsoft and not using the launcher that FFXIV fires off?

    What I would do:
    1) Run the installer above. (use reinstall or repair/check options if offered)
    2) Restart PC
    3) Try FFXIV install

Need to use the offline installer for that to work (the web installer will skip some files, an issue Microsoft never addressed). The link to the runtime installer is linked in the "Additional Information" section. It's about a 95MB download that unpacks several executables that have to be run separately--they just copy all the files over and register them regardless of what you already have installed.

The OP mentioned trying this fix already, so I'm guessing he/she already tried the offline version. If indeed the web installer was used, then the offline one should be done instead.

Yeah we tried the offline installer too which didnt fix it either unfortunately. even tried doing the install in safe mode just for the hell of it too. Didnt help. Did abit more research and it said it might be a catalog corruption in windows itself thats preventing it. Not sure if i totally understand it but cant rule it out i guess. Asside from formatting and reinstalling windows 7 not sure how this directx detection problem can be fixed.

Longshot... but it might actually be an issue with missing Visual Studio/Visual Basic files. Seen it happen before.

Have you hit Windows Update and made sure that you have not just your critical updates current but also some optional things like your .Net's are up to date? Check for both the 3.x and 4.x releases--run them in separate passes, starting with 3.x first, reboot, then go back and run updates for 4.x. There have been problems in the past if you run them all at once (presumably because of deprecation that occurs moving from 3.x to 4.x).

There may even be some updates for Windows Media Player as well you may want to grab (it may install some of the offending components as well).

If after all that it still fails to move forward, might want to look for any options updates listed for the Visual Studio lines (may be references to just VC, VS, or VB runtimes and such).

Last resorts you could try running system file checker (run CMD prompt as Admin, then run sfc.exe /scannow) to see if it detects any corrupt/missing files, or do a repair install of Windows before doing a complete overwrite.
