Dungeons are tough, most people just want in and out. The general attitude seems to be "why would I talk to you? We will most likely never meet again." Not my opinion, but many others have stated this, piss poor attitude if you ask me. Trials seem to have alot more "community" if you will. Been doing some alot lately a bit more engaging than dungeons.
People just want their drops, tomes, gear, mats, or whatever from dungeons and don't want to talk. Its a sad reality, some will just blame SE for the design and not really remember why they started playing in the first place.
The community is hidden away in FCs and Linkshells. A lot of the people more towards end game tend to know each other.
June is correct. It's a a lot of cliques which isn't always bad. But people tend to feel left out. However, you can go to Mor Dhona and there are people always talking there and showing off their newest shinies. I would recommend getting invited to at least 1 hunt ls and joining about 2 social lses. It's a small start, but you'll meet like minded people. Just shout in Mor dhona or Limsa Lower decks and someone will get you. If you don't like the people, you can leave the LS or blist them. I'm in a small fc and we're all anti-social, but I'll recommend Log horizon. It's a large fc with a decent retention percentage. The FC leader seems nice, but I've never met them. With hundreds of members, you're bound to find friends.
I doubt you are seeking an FC, but if you would like to add me to your friend list, I can let FC members know if you're running anything. Most of the time, people are running for varied reasons, be it boredom, desynthing gear, mahatma lights, nexus lights, you name it. Just speak up to myself ingame, or if you see people in STAB!, usually we don't bite.. hard.

Learning that you sometimes only have that one place where you may fit in is just the truth of online in general, not only games but even things like chats. 90% of the time, you won't find people who fit in with, but once you find that one you feel comfortable with, you feel fully at home. If you wanted to give my FC a try, I won't force anything, and zero pressure to stay, but it may be what you're looking for.. Less of a "job" in the game, more of a place to call home, from what I read, that may be more what you want.

Kinda late to the party on this, but I know what you mean on the community part. I remember back on XI when you would just stand around just talking with people in an area, but that being said you were generally waiting for a party to be formed so you could actually do something when that was going on. Those conversations though didn't end with the general chat though and usually continued into the party while you were fighting or delving into a dungeon. I myself am socially awkward, and I kinda miss being forced in a way into socializing. I feel your pain though, because I often find myself and my other few friends that are on just wandering around until we can build up enough courage to attempt to grab a random player for a dungeon run. I've met some pretty awesome players both game and conversation wise that way, but it never seems to last beyond the dungeon exit. I'm always looking for a good group of people that like to socialize as much as they like to dive into dungeons.
I felt the same away for awhile just not very long ago. You should consider making your own FC or help build one up, that's what i'm doing now.. XD In my opinion.. that's really the only way you can go about these things, considering when you try to join an established FC with lots of people you can feel out of the group. it's just easier to make your own thing, and try finding like-minded players.I'm not really sure what I'm seeking. A lot of people are saying that all of the community is in FCs and LSs. About a year ago I tried to join them, but it didn't help. I was left out of everything in every one i joined. Being left out was worse then just playing alone on my own. Ever since then I've just been doing my own thing, but the game feels so empty :/. I don't know what to do.

If you are looking at just a small group of people to friend and chat, you can always message me and my small group and by small I mean you would be the 4th person. We are all super laid back, casual, and generally try to be good people. I have been looking around for bigger groups to be friendly with ours, and if you don't feel like hanging about at least we might be able to point you in a direction. Over the past few days I have met some good players in the community by reaching out. And just to be clear, I mean small group, you would be our 4th person. Just enough to do dungeons...lol.
