I kinda agree. The "traditional" RPG is "cloth for casters" because of practicality reasons (or too much adherance to D&D/Tolkien), Leather/light armor for Damage dealers, that have to move a lot (eg Pugilist, Ranger, Thief, or other dexterity-class), and heavy armor for Tank types. This is all fine in the realm of Pen and Paper, and early games that couldn't have more than one wardrobe change, but with todays 3D games that can actually render cloth flowing, you'd think there would be a more practical reason why all caster gear remains Cleric(full head coverings)/Sorcerer(pointy hats/tiara) cloth styles.

At least the styling aren't being taken from FFX's obsession with belts. Things got a little too silly beyond practical.

Given that we don't have the ability to wear heavy armor on casters (like they did in 1.0 pre-jobs and like many NPCs can do - I don't know what the problem was with having gear be wearable by anybody but have a 'preferred' class/job/level or why they decided they needed to remove that option, as it was awesome), I'm OK with the robes. I'd just like some more variety, perhaps in length and style.
Probably had more to do with the generic animations used by V1.0 for everything. V1.0 's models were a bit more different than V2.0's
