Thanalan - train tracks... what are they for?

Every time I come upon it, I think "You guys wanna go see a dead body?" I referenced it in a video even (poorly, at that. XD).

Too bad there wasn't a train then you could have, "That was the all-time train dodge"

If you talk to the NPC's at Blackbrush station they will tell you the line is used to haul ore from the Nanawa mines and that is what they are waiting for. At the Ul dah station the npc's there will say they are waiting for the mine carts to come through so they can get a drink.
