Coming back after 6 months

So I just saw yesterday that square introduced Ninja, golden saucer, and the ability for my wife and I to get married in game. My friend who has been playing told me to get it and start playing as SWTOR is going downhill, fast. SWTOR did not allow us to get married, share a legacy or anything so we left for this game.

So I thought hey, I loved ff11 and now that my favorite class has been introduced and my wife and I can be married in game, Ill play it.

Upon getting a new character and everything created the way I want, I find that me and my wife can not join my friends server (Balmug).

So, we have to wait until it opens? Is that how it works? I have never had this problem in my 18 years of playing mmorpgs.

Also as a new returning player, when one gets married, do your two characters share the same last name? We are really excited for this feature. Thank u.

Balmung is locked because everyone on the planet wants to be there apparently. I personally don't understand the fascination with having to be on the biggest, most overrun server, but everyone else does. The server can only let so many characters in. If you try to make your character in the pre-dawn to early morning hours (anywhere from 3-7am, I've seen) you could have some luck. You can, however, also make your characters on another server and transfer them to Balmung - it bypasses the lock.

No, your characters don't share the same last name. You can buy a name change from the Mog Station, though, but you don't need to because you're making new characters. There are no special perks to marriage except the actual eternal bonding ceremony and having a ring that lets you teleport directly to the spouse. Houses and such are still only ownable and accessible (modification wise) by the person who buys them. Not an issue at all for those of us who live with our SOs, though, as we can just place stuff on their computer.

Thanks for the info. We are going to be doing the create on another server and transfering. As far as houses are concerned, I doubt we will get one as I hear all of the houses are full. Hopefully Square makes more plots available with the new expansion.

On the same last name bit, you guys can make characters with the same last name.

Server transfer cannot bypass the server lock as far as i know. So even if you create the character on another server, you still have to wait till Balmung is unlocked. It only helps you save the time need to create a new character.

I take this from the World Transfer ToS:

Characters cannot be transferred to Worlds with restrictions on character creation.

And it didn't by pass for me before when I transferred to Odin. You can, ofc, try as you want, i just stated my experience that's all

Not sure if it's the same on every server, but the character creation lockouts dynamically update on an almost constant basis (much more frequently than the 4-hour intervals that the help pages suggest). If you can get on at slow times of day (if such a thing exists on that server) or shortly after the servers have come back up after maintenance, you might get lucky and be able to create a new character there.

Yep. Balmung was open at 7am (CDT) today. I don't know if it's locked now or not, though.
