well i have no clue as to what steam is/does, but from how sony handled its vita games at launch (39.99 physical, 34.99 digital) on even day 1 games i figured most digital sales were supposed to be cheaper. i own ff14 as a digital copy from what i believe was a mistake so i didnt know if it was cheaper than physical or not.

Steam is a platform where you can buy a lot (like, really a lot) of games as digital copies. The prices are around the same as the physical copies. Though (and that's where it becomes interesting) they hold sales in summer and around christmas, with reductions from 30% to 90% (some games may even be free when they feel like it. As an example, they offered Portal for free for 3 days after Portal 2 release) on nearly all the big hits of the year.

They also have regular sales throughout the year, with 10-30% reduction most of the time on indies.

    (that's PC exclusive though)
