Noob Materia question

Hi everyone.
This is a really noob question about Materia, but please bear with me. FFXIV is pretty much my first game ever, so this is all very new to me.

If I want to imbue my Vintage Robe with the maximum 5 bits of Materia:
- I wear a Vintage Robe until I achieve 100% Spiritbond.
- I must turn that robe into Materia, thus destroying it in the process.
- Buy another Vintage Robe, and repeat for a total of 5 times to get 5 pieces of Materia.

Once I have 5 bits of Materia:
- Buy another Vintage Robe and meld it with the 5 pieces of Materia I possess

So basically, if I am trying to do this without buying Materia from someone else, I need to go through 6 Vintage Robes to end up with 1 that would be the robe I keep?

This is completely speculative, but I'd wager there will be a cheaper alternative that would yield the same/similar materia. But theoretically, I believe you are correct.

The stats you want on your armor will determine what materia you will attach to it.
What we don't know yet is what gear will result into what type of materia.

It seems like people are very excited about Materia -- especially if they played FFXI -- so I thought it was a Final Fantasy staple with well-established properties. Having no FFXI experience, I'd been kind of lost. ^^;

materia came from ff7 however its going to be pretty different.

And we will be able to buy materia from the wards as they are tradable.
