weapon damage types + ability damage types?

so, here is my question...

If an ability does a certain type of damage, lets say 'slashing'. Does it make a difference what type of damage my equipped weapon does the most of? In other words will a slashing ability have a greater effect when using a weapon that does mostly slashing damage?

I'm not sure even the devs know. Until Yoshi-P manages to tear everything down, we'll just have to guess how the game works because there is no explanation provided anywhere.
