I don't understand. What is stopping us from using STEAM as our way of playing once it is in our library?

Once we register the mogstation key that comes with the physical edition to our account, wouldn't it act like anything else? It isn't like we aren't going to be download HW through a patch anyway. Clients and Servers need the same information to communicate with each other.

Also, doesn't steam come with a liscense key for you to input onto the mogstation anyway? Mine did. So I don't understand the issue.

It does, but the steam license key is just that, a steam license key. If you wanted to play heavensward and you have a steam license for ARR, you must use a steam licensed heavensward key.

How you play the game does not matter. How you bought the game does matter.

Okay, I'm seriously not getting this. Square recognizes my account, I can just download the launcher straight from them, bypassing steam entirely, login with my account and it's completely kosher. Why the bloody heck can't I just link the CE physical key to my existing account? It's not like they don't know I bought the base game already.

Did you get your copy of ARR from the steam store or no?

If yes : You must get heavensward from steam store. Getting the game from gamestop or SE will not work.
If no: You cannot get heavensward from steam store, it will not be compatible.

Even if you bought the game from the steam store, you can run it however you like. But Square recognizes your account as a steam account. This is the important thing here. Steam accounts can play the game with or without using steam, but you must purchase heavensward from the steam store. You cannot use a digital copy from the SE store or a physical CE copy.

Steam license key of Heavensward however will not.

You have to realize the key difference here. Actual software client has absolutely ZERO connection with the Steam client - you can launch FF14 without Steam at all.
What you're buying on Steam is a product key. You never used the Steam key with your account, you just used Steam to download the client.
Actual game is identical between Steam and a download elsewhere. What matters here are the product keys, which are separated into Steam and non-Steam ones.
I guess I need some clarification here as I'm in the same boat as Vvardenmarrn..

I played in 1.0. I now play through Steam (I bought a copy on Steam when it was insanely cheap)
I'm guessing I'm OK if I wait to preorder Heavensward through Steam no?

If you are using the same service-account as you did during 1.0 you have a PC retail-key Windows-license attached to the service-account. I'm unsure as to whether a Heavensward Steam-key can be redeemed on a retail-PC ARR service-account, the only thing that has been confirmed is that a Heavensward retail PC-key cannot be redeemed on a Steam ARR service-account.

I honestly think all of this information is wrong. We will see in 3 months time.

I feel like I'm rehashing the same thing multiple people have already tried to explain, but I'm feeling lucky:

When you look at your account on the Mog Station it'll show there is a Windows licence, but there's actually two different Windows licences, Steam and non-Steam. Both will simply show as just Windows, the only distinction is that the Steam version will have an additional link to pay by Steam wallet (that's how you can tell whether you have Steam or non-Steam). You also can only add one Windows licence to each service account.

If you bought the game of Steam, they say you must buy the expansion via Steam. Given how many times they've said this, I don't think it's going to be optional, it's definitely a requirement. So considering how FFXIV purchases on Steam work now it seems logical that a Heavensward purchase via Steam will give you a code to enter into the Mogstation to add Heavensward for Windows to your service account. Steam doesn't do this directly much the same as you have to add the code they give you for the main game to the Mogstation yourself if you buy the main game through Steam.

Steams only provides codes and the launcher (the same launcher as non-Steam people use that's why non-Steam people can log into it and vice versa).

At the point the expansion code is added to the Mogstation it'll check to make sure that both the main game and the expansion are the same "type" (Steam or non-Steam) and that's where you'll get your error.

    Non Steam on Mogstation:

    Steam version on Mogstation:

Yes I have one of each on the same SE account so I will have to buy the correct Heavensward expansions for each. I hope this helps to tell the difference?

In the words of Bruce Banner 'Well this is all horrible.' Dictating where I have to buy something from is surely something I could take to Trading Standards or is that just wishful thinking on my part?

They could at least make it so that the people who have brought the physical CE can still use their codes to make the copy from steam they now HAVE to buy on top of the already high price for the physical CE from a regular version into the CEs version. Otherwise SE is expecting people to fork out at least £190 just so that they can have a physical copy of the CE and the CE digital version of the game.

In any case way to go SE you've managed to piss off most of your UK players with the CE pricing and every person who wanted the CE but has steam. So much for all that positive hype going down. You've managed to make it all negative.
