Crafting timer?

Is there any point to having the timer when crafting? I am not sure if I am missing it's purpose here but I can't see what it actually does other than make you rush messages to friends.

If it is was removed would there be a huge downside that I am not seeing?

Good point O.o I mean i just talk in between syths if I need to, but I really can not see a downside of taking off timer during syths. What if your stomach goes *GRAHHHHHH* from the bad tacos you ate at a nearby Mexican restaurant in the middle of a syth that is important and the bathroom calls. I would like to not avoid my system just to finish a craft, but I also do not want to lose the mats! O.o
