Tanks and healers

I'm just wondering what the best tank class is in end game right now. I've played a tank in other MMOs and think I may switch to one in this game. Are all tanks equal or do groups look for one class more?

I also have the same question for healers. I won't be trying a healer for a while though.

It's honestly just a matter of preference IMO. There isn't a better or worse - they all have their ups and downs, and most endgame groups want one of both, so play what you enjoy more.

I haven't gotten either tanks to 50 yet, but what I've heard from others: Warriors are more active and fun to play from what people have said. Pallys are better at reducing incoming damage to themselves and have a more boring 1-2-3 aggro holding style. WARs are given a dps role (if their gear is equal or less than the pally's gear) by their party in instances where you only need one tank but there are two.

And for healers, which I main SCH and almost have WHM to 50: SCH is damage reduction healing - shields, a bubble that reduces damage, pet buff that increses magic defense, etc. WHM is basically mostly healing. You get a buffed Protect & Stoneskin and your skills are aimed towards healing up or regening after damage. SCHs are more proactive and WHMs are more reactive. SCH is easier to dps on in between heals (because of being able to Cleric Stance, throw on four dots, Cleric stance off and back to healing) whereas WHMs only have two(?) DoTs and a couple dps skills. SCHs can regen 1/4-1/3 of their MP every minute, whereas WHM is a bit more restricted on MP.

If you want to pursue hardcore raids--endgame groups want 1 of both. They both bring different things to the table and in the hardcore stuff you really don't want to be without one or the other. This applies to both healers and tanks.

Good scholars, however, are rarer than good white mages, so there might be more openings there at times.

As mentioned, the ideal endgame teams aren't after which one's "better" - they're after having both represented. They're also somewhat incomparable, really; for both healer and tank, each has different advantages. There might be a slight leaning towards a PLD and SCH whenever you're talking going to solo tank or solo heal... but that's it.
