Steam version, Pre-Order, and CE

Is there any confirmation about how this is going to work? I hear that the one you buy from SE and physical copies of Heavansward wont be compatible with with the Steam version and I also hear people saying otherwise.

Is there any sort of solid info on all of this?

From my understanding, based off the Letter from the Producer, you have to purchase a Steam version of the expansion to have it work.

I've been checking Steam every time I get on my computer to see if there's any information on that end. So far, I haven't seen anything - which doesn't bode well for a preorder that's supposed to be available soon.

I imagine it will be available to preorder on Steam before the game is released, not sure about today, but I worry about not being able to get the bonus items and early access if we have to go through Steam. If that's the case, I'd be highly disappointed in SE as a physical item through their store is one thing, a digital shouldn't matter.

I too own the steam version and i keep checking to see if it's been added in steams listings. I'm hoping the steam version is up sooner rather than after the expansion hits.
(Shudders at the thought that I may be forced to look on in envy while the rest of my fc are enjoying the expansion coz steam version wasnt out )

Steam only updates their store inventory once a day, that's at 10 AM PDT. We won't find out any new information until at least that time.

I'm just not sure about this. I read that if I play through Steam I have to buy Heavensward through Steam. Does this mean if I bought it on Steam, I'm locked and have to buy the Steam version of Heavensward or if it's just like the PS/PC thing where you have to buy a PS copy to play on PS and a PC copy to play on PC (as in you need the Heavensward Steam version to go with the FFXIV:ARR Steam version) 'cause I heard some people bought the game on Steam but play through the official SE client.

Steam only uses digital software. Only Steam keys can be redeemed on Steam. Physical copies of games don't come with Steam keys.

If you must have the Physical CE stuff, buy it, tie it to your Mog Station account, then buy the Steam digital upgrade. This is how Steam has always worked.

Clearly you have never bought the boxed version of Skyrim, or the multitude of other physical games that can be activated via Steam.
It's not possible with Heavensward simply because Valve doesn't want to do it, because unlike Skyrim where ALL physical copies had to be activated via Steam, FFXIV has other methods, and the gigantic mass of donut batter known as Gaben doesn't like that. Steam has to get it's cut where it can.

That's why we're confused.

I can't access it right now since I'm at work, but there are ways to redeem outside codes in Steam, it's possible that Valve may allow that. It's only speculation on my part right now because I cannot really confirm any information from work (stupid firewalls).

Besides, how expansions work for MMOs compared to single player games is different. Most information for MMOs is stored server side, single players are stored locally. Usually if you get an expansion for an MMO, it's simply a flag that allows you to access certain content. When everyone does the download on launch day, it's usually the same for everyone whether they got the expansion or not.
