I am unsure as to why so many people think SE does maint for no reason, they have a reason, they aren't just randomly deciding "hey guize, lets bring server down and all login and spawn bahamut in Limsa teehee partay time!"

This also might be something out of their control, since the cause says server equipment issue, it is possible the company where they hold their servers is doing some kind of maint work themselves

Hmm, I don't see a whole lot of people questioning the need for maintenance. The problem is the way they schedule it. Here's since the beginning of December:

Wed 12/17 09 p.m. to 12/18 12 a.m. (PST)
Wed 12/24 09 p.m. to 12/25 12 a.m. (PST)
Wed 01/07 11 p.m. to 01/08 02 a.m. (PST)
Mon 01/19 03 p.m. to 01/20 03 a.m. (PST)
Wed 01/21 12 a.m. to 01/21 03 a.m. (PST)
Wed 01/28 11 p.m. to 01/29 02 a.m. (PST)

So, if Wednesday evening is one of the only times per week a person in North America can sit down and play, that person is going to encounter a whole lot of maintenance. Then when something like last night happens, the game starts feeling unplayable.
