May I just point out (as I have before) that Kilts are skirts by any measure of the word, and there are many, many examples of garb worn by very manly men in ancient times that would immediately qualify as a dress today.

Part of the problem with impressions of masculinity and femininity is that they are not informed by our knowledge of history, logic or truth, they are informed by our local contemporary culture. In some western nations that contemporary culture is overtly masculine (especially among gamers) and appears to be borderline phobic with regard to femininity of any kind.

Frankly I would hope that game makers in general would learn to ignore the immature voices steeped in that overtly (and overly) masculine contemporary sub-culture, and work to their own goals and norms allowing said immature voices to mature and catch up with the rest of humanity in their own time.

I would like to point out: implying that western nations are borderline phobic or overtly masculine isn't anymore mature than said westerner bemoaning the fact that they have to wear a 'kilt' for a game. It's all opinion, none of which are more valid than the other. Unless of course, a global masculinity committee is formed that outlines what is or isn't masculine for the modern man.

Even then, I very much doubt Harry Potter or He who must not be named would have voluntarily worn the Sky Pirate's Coat of Casting regardless of what magical benefits it bestowed. It'd just be too embarrassing!

No good female tank gear? The high allagan coat looks amazing on my character (going back to that glamour soon), and I'm really looking forward to getting the tank contest winner. The weeping city tank/Drg armor also looks much better on females than males (really wish the black was for tanks, pld blue/white just doesn't work for my war)

Sometimes it seems like some only think women look good when they're trying to be overly sexy.

I don't get why this would be a thing, there are plenty of manly man sets if that'd what you are looking for, just as there are sexy sets, cute sets...I totally get the problem with class restrctions, but "too feminine" sounds odd.

Ah well, another clash of culture, brought to you by the same folks that made the year 2016. :P

As a Final Fantasy MMO, this game gets two (often fairly different) sources to draw players from. Some come here due to the Final Fantasy franchise, and are generally quite familiar with the rather androgynous aesthetic it has always included. Others come here from other MMOs, and may find it odd if they've only played western games before with a more macho aesthetic. So sometimes there's a bit of a culture clash.

(Though personally, I prefer when SE sticks with the more typically FF aesthetic.)

Well, they already did a lot of that western medieval inspired (and generally more realistic) heavy plate in the early leveling gear for tanks. They branched out to the more fantastical styles at endgame to add variety. But if what you like is medieval plate armor, just look back through the various level 15 - 49 tank sets and you should find something you can glamour.

Yet it (and similar ones) often does alienate female players. The popularity of overly masculinized games is part of why it took so long before women took to gaming as much as men had.

Final Fantasy, however, has always appealed to both genders pretty equally (even back when the stereotype of most gamers being male was still true). Doing so doubled FF's potential audience and, though far from its only strength, that's likely added at least some element to the popularity it's achieved.

:/ in a game where 90% of the cute female characters you see running around are guys, stating this game is too girly seems like a silly point to make.

Only if you want to believe 90% of cats are that way. Many cats are female players as well as any race.

    Women like cat people too...

Angry Response: Are you saying only guys can make pretty characters!!???! >:[
