    Total newb, question on crafting

Since I'm mostly interesting in leveling my mage classes, I want to start crafting by leveling stuff that I can use. I'm guessing weaving is one of them for equipment, along with leather working possibly, but what do I take up for creating weapons for my magic using character?
And what gathering jobs do I need for these?
    Thanks!

Thank you very much, and why has no one mentioned that Wutai (my server) and Fabul have been offline for a while now?

EDIT: Oh, a certain website with server status lied. >.< Wutai was only offline a little bit...darn. Ah well, thanks again for the info, I'm really getting the hang of this game.

    Another question though!
I started in Gridania, and I'm having trouble finding quests or even the guild for weavers here...

You can visit the yellow gremlin database site if you want to see the list of craft-able mage weapons for Conjurer and Thaumaturge along with recipes details and craft requirement.

    > List of CON weapons: http://ffxiv.yg.com/items?f=c=1.6
    > List of THM weapons: http://ffxiv.yg.com/items?f=c=1.7

As for gathering job, you'll need Botany in order to harvest [item=10005202]moko grass[/item] and [item=10005203]cotton boll[/item] for making hempen and cotton yarn. You can begin making [item=10005301]hempen yarn[/item] as a rank 1 weaver and work your way to making [item=10005001]undyed hempen cloth[/item]; this recipe requires weaving training and the use of the Common Clothshop facility, so I wouldn't recommend attempting to make it until you are at a higher rank. After hempen you should then grind on [item=10005302]cotton yarn[/item] and making [item=10005005]undyed cotton cloth[/item].

    > Weathered Hatchet for changing your class into Botanist - required to harvest from trees.
    > Bronze Scythe for harvesting moko grass, cotton bolls and things. >Guide to Botany<

The weaver's guild is located in Ul'dah so you need to leave Gridiania and travels south, past Camp Tranquil, until you reach the region of Thanalan. Travels westward from there and you will pass two other camps before you reach Ul'dah. You can press 'M' on your keyboard to open up your map . On the way make sure to "attunes" yourself to any Aetheryte crystal located at the camp that you pass along the way so you will be able to instantly teleport to those location with your anima. You can return to Gridiania at any time if you have enough anima (setting your "home point" at any Aether. crystal and you'll be be able to return there without using anime), you can also set up three favored teleport locations that will half the anime amount for teleporting to those respective locations.

Once you reach Ul'dah, touch the crystal there and go to the Adventure's Guild and rent your two retainers that will help you sell things at the market wards (you can do this in Grid. but since Ul'dah is more populated on all servers, it's better to set up your retainers and go shopping in Ul'dah wards). The recipes for making armors are quite convoluted at the moment unless you're willing to spend a lot of time leveling various crafts and searching the wards for materials. Just try to keep your main weapon upgraded as your rank increases and maybe your body armor as well since those increase your damage and defense the most. Stats for battles/crafting and recipes are getting an overhaul in the next patch (late Sept) so it will be easier for newbies to make and find items and armors, so try not to get discouraged.

As for quests, you can get 8 regional-leves for leveling your mage/battle classes and 8 local-leves for leveling your crafting classes every 36 hours. There are NPC's quests as well but I'm not sure how plentiful those are at low levels and they might only show up depending on your highest rank.

Thanks guys, and now another question!
This one about first making money in the game.
I notice some characters have it so you can open a personal shop from them if you click them (brown bag icon).
Do I need to do anything special to do this?
And what kind of items should I sell and how do I know what price is reasonable?
<just about gotten the hang of the game, but needs money making tips

To setup your bazaar, open your Inventory and select an item, then select sell item. Set a price and quantity and confirm. That's basically it, you'll now see a bag icon next to your name. You can also put items up for repair or offer to buy more of an item you have.

However, most goods aren't traded through player bazaars. At some point the innkeeper NPC at the Adventurer's Guild will direct you to one of the nearby counters to get a Retainer, or you can go yourself at any time. A Retainer is an NPC that provides you with 100 slots of storage and an additional 10-slot bazaar. You can get two at the moment.

Find the "Market Wards" in whichever city on th - oh wait! You're on Wutai! Hi! Welcome! Hope to see you in-game!

In that case, follow Cid's directions to get to Ul'dah first. It doesn't matter which city you hire your Retainers in. Find the "Market Wards" on the map; they're right next to the Aetheryte Plaza (go here too so you can teleport back whenever). Walk into the markets and a window will appear. Select "Item Search Counter", and find the item you want to sell. If you need help determining which ward it goes in, look it up on ffxiv.yg.com. Now, go to that ward, summon your retainer (interaction on main menu), move items to them, and undercut everyone else who is selling that same item.

    Some gil making tips

Buy tiger cod and maiden carp from Holasfhis (7,6 Upper Decks, Limsa) to make wind and earth shards that you can sell in Ul'dah's wards or for leveling your crafts; since weaving and woodworking uses a lot of earth and wind shards as does lots of other crafts they are better to sell than other shards. Making shard from fish required you to be an Alchemist, >Weathered Alembic<, you can begin at rank~1. It takes four lightning shard and a fish to make 12 shards of an element. Try to price your shards/items at around the market's price so that your stuff will appear on the item search (it only list the twenty lowest prices for that items)

    Things to farm and sells
`Sheepskins - 22.50% Drop from Lost Ewe(also a nice source for wind shards) at (25,41) in Lower La Noscea, south from Limsa. Sell these in the MW, ~3-5K Gil depending on you server, higher for +3's.
`Marmot pelts - Drop rates same as above. Marmots are found outside Ul'dah, Lim-....o_o, well they can be found anywhere really. NPC these, 350-ish to ~450gil for one, unsure of the exact amount.
`Other - Most things you should probably sell to NPC's, except for skins, hides, and some pelts, those should be sold in the wards. Logs and ores from botany and mining should maybe be NPC's unless you're a botanist and/or miner and can gather a bunch to sell on your retainers(don't put things that that are hard to sell, like marmot meat or rat tail up for sell), check market price to see what has value or not, most things aren't worth taking up a retainer bazaar space imo. Fishing can also helps with making Gil since people buys fish for ranking alchemy, but I'm not much of a fisher so not really sure of all the details.

Crafting is a big part of the game and can make you the most money therefore it's a good idea to pick up on a few crafts. It can be a big grind and because of how it functions atm, can takes a lot of time until they either add better way for rank up crafting or improve on the crafting system but for now just try to take it slowly if you're playing casually. Post any questions, if you need help on what to grind at certain ranks.

Let see, what else..., -do your storyline quests (one appears every few levels or so, they can give a nice chunk of Gil and SP), get leves done every 36 hours for Gil along with the farming/grinding and crafting, as well as any quests that you might be able to pick up and you be should be able to make some decent Gil. Hope this helps.
