What do you do when a newish player (greenleaf) asks for help in game randomly?

What do you do when a newish player (greenleaf) asks for help in game randomly?

I've had this happen to me a couple of times and I've tried to help as best I can. The first time I tried didn't go so well because I went about it the wrong way. I'm just curious how some other veterans handle it? Just give advice? Run through content with them? Gear them up to a more appropriate level and send them on their way?

Advice is freely given. Help on a duty depends on how I'm feeling. Gear is given at a major discount, but NEVER for free. I help players help themselves, handholding never works well.

If they're asking for advice, I'll pretty much always respond unless afk.

If they're asking for gear / gil, I will not respond at all.

Newbies I know (someone from RL, someone I invited to play from another game, etc) get 100K and a FC invite, or at least a LS invite. Random people coming up to me on the street get free advice and I always try to respond to questions in shouts, but that's about the extent of it.

Depends on how new they are. I had a level 50 Ninja ask me for advice when I was in the Gridania GC, and he was wearing full strength right sides. After talking to him for about a half hour, it was clear he understood the general idea of how to gear himself, but was simply misguided. So I gave him 2 Web Links (reddit and here), made him full i59 right sides, and a linkshell invite. That was about 3 months ago, and he still plays .

It depends on what they're asking for, really. Help with advice I have no problem giving. Help with duties/quests I can do if I'm not busy. Like... while I was sitting in Swiftperch last week, I saw someone shouting for help killing some mobs for a quest. It turned out to be a new and somewhat undergeared paladin (af gear, i70 weapon, NQ i70 accessories). I ended up helping him down DD and AV so he could get started on his relic quest, along with giving him some tanking advice. What can I say? I was bored and I have a soft spot for baby tanks. :3

Depends what they are asking for, free gil or stuff. Nope.
If they just want advice on the game, I help as best I can. If I am busy, I offer to add them as a friend or join one of my LSs or FC so I can help with their questions later.
